1 Proposing and Assessing Decipherments of the Disk of Phaistos Abstract The Disk of Phaistos is one of the most mysterious archeological finds of the Antiquity. The article discusses the issue of the theoretical and practical decipherment of such an item. A number of criteria are proposed for assessing the validity of past or future hypotheses of decipherment. The article also proposes a new decipherment of the Disk of Phaistos. The language is hypothesized to be Hurrian and the writing system to be close to the so-called Anatolian hieroglyphs which have been used to write Luwian and Urartean in the first millenium BCE. The article first describes the Disk of Phaistos. Several hypotheses of decipherment have already been proposed for this mysterious artefact. None has gained widespread acceptation. It is interesting to try to understand why they have not been considered successful and what a satisfactory decipherment would be. The article comprises three parts: a theoretical

It is attested from the last centuries of the 3rd millennium BC until around the middle of the thirteenth century BC. Hurrian used to be the main language of the Mitanni Kingdom, as is attested by the El-Amarna E24 letter written by Tušratta to the Egyptian pharaoh Amenophis III, known as Nimmuˀuria in the letter. Hurrian is thought to have become extinct not long after the fall of that kingdom in the thirteenth century BC, probably around 1000 BC. Après une présentation des dialectes, suit une description de la présence carthaginoise et romaine au Maghreb. Plusieurs mots attestent encore des contacts entre Carthaginois et Romains avec les Berbères, sans parler de l alphabet tifinaγ à une date sans doute plus ancienne. PRESENTATION Le groupe berbère est une entité linguistique bien individualisée et reconnaissable, sur les plans phonétique et morphologique. Outre l ensemble touareg au sud du domaine, il existe au Maroc une forte proportion de locuteurs berbères, avec trois formes principales, le chleuh (tachelhit ou tasusit) au sud, l amaziγ au centre et le rifain (tarifit) au nord. More than 30 items of the basic vocabulary are presented together with a table of sound correspondences. Introduction So far Basque has most often been compared with Caucasic languages and been claimed to be especially related to these Caucasic languages. For example Bengtson (2003:23) assertively states: “Basque and the languages that are [sic] most closely related to it, namely the (North) Caucasian languages, and Burushaski. ” Trask (1997:35) was equally assertive in the opposite direction: “Basque is a genetically isolated language: there is not the slightest shred [sic] of evidence that it is related to any other living language. ” On the whole the belief that Basque and PIE have about nothing in common but (late Romance) loanwords is widespread.
