Why USB Load Cells? During the 1980s the advent of PCs and PDAs made computing power ubiquitous and affordable. Billions of PC and PDAs are now in use. During the 1990s - the arrival of the Internet revolution made communications between PCs and PDAs and mobile phones possible. In a matter of a decade, billions of users are now connected to the Internet via PC and other hand held devices. Some manufacturers believed that sensors that can be easily connected to PCs and the Internet will become more powerful and help sense the world and provide usable data to make the world a better place. For e. g. temperature sensors that turn and off heaters/coolers to optimize energy use. Loadstar Sensors were the first company to offer digital load cells with high level PC friendly digital output! Loadstar’s USB load cells were the first one to offer connectivity to a PC using a USB port of a PC in 2006. The USB Protocol was developed to make it easier to connect external devices to a PC r

Why Capacitance? One question asked frequently; why use capacitance? Resistive sensors have been used for a long time…so why change? Here is an attempt to answer this question: 1. What is capacitance? a. It is the ability of a system to store charge. So if you take a set of parallel plates and apply a potential difference to it (Voltage), then for a brief time interval, electrons move from one plate to the other (a small current is generated) until it reaches a state of equilibrium (the current stops). The charge gets stored between the two parallel plates. b. The amount of charge that can stored (its Capacitance) depends on the area between the plates, the distance between the plates and the dielectric constant between the plates. c. The formula for the Capacitance of the system can be shown as: i. C = Er*E0*A/d where Er is the dielectric Constant, E0 is the Permittivity of free space, A is the area of overlap between the plates and d is the gap between the plates ii. For Ai

Setting up a USB load cell only requires a connection to a computer with a CD drive for the reading software. Commands are then sent to the USB load cell via the software to take force readings. The process is simple, but the engineers must realize that the maximum weight limit of a load cell varies by design. Review Options of Load Cells Due to sturdy stainless steel designs, digital USB load cells can withstand weights of up to 10,000 pounds. ". . . Due to sturdy stainless steel designs, digital USB load cells can withstand weights of up to 10,000 pounds. . " At the very least, these types of load cells bring an accuracy of 0. 15 percent, although with high-end models, it can be increased to 0. 05 percent. They can come with a variety of options and accessories, depending on the needs of an engineerin

Load Cell Selection Guidelines When you measure forces or loads, in addition to the capacity and size of the load cell, a number of application requirements need to be carefully considered. These include: Operating Temperature Conditions (Well controlled, room temperature or outdoor, harsh environments with changing humidity and temperature) Duration of measurement (Short term measurement with a Tare or longer term measurements where Tare is not feasible) Absolute Accuracy Required (as a percentage of full scale output or as a percentage of reading) Direction of loading (tension or compression or both) Certifications Needed (for trade applications needing NTEP or OIML certifications or test and measurement needing ASTM E-74 OR R & D) Mounting Options (Fasten sensor on both sides or no need for fastening at all) Output required (Analog mV/V, 0-5V, 4-20mA, Digital USB, Digital Wireless, Digital RS-232/485) Measurement Speed (1Hz or up to 100Hz or faster than 100Hz) Total cost of operati
