HOMEWORK PROGRAM FOR 4/5H 2012 Dear Parents/Carers, For the past three years, my class have successfully engaged in a homework format based on a grid system. The ‘Homework Grid’ was introduced in conjunction with a class wikispace. The aim was to make the students more independent when completing homework and present tasks that not only cover essential consolidation of fundamental skills but tasks that involve a diverse range of thinking skills across the curriculum. There are three levels of accomplishment where each one is rewarded. I understand that all students are different and some delight in participating in homework, whilst others have little time due to extra curricular activities and some just lack the motivation. This system was inspired by the research work of Professor Ian Lillicoe who specialises in engaging the more reluctant students in learning, especially middle school aged boys. Over the past years, it has proven to be successful in its implementation as the co

WHAT IS A WIKI? A wiki is a web site that lets any visitor become a participant. You can create or edit the actual site contents without any special technical knowledge or tools. All you need is a computer with an Internet connection. A wiki is continuously “under revision. ” It is a living collaboration whose purpose is the sharing of the creative process and product by many. One famous example is Wiki-pedia, an online encyclopaedia with no “authors” but millions of contributors and editors. The word "wiki" comes from Hawaiian language, meaning "quick" or "fast. " Connections • Build greater connections between new and old knowledge by allowing student-created structure for the information and ideas. • Build on the best of Bloom: Students use synthesis and evaluation constantly and consistently when they work on a wiki. Creativity • Build creativity skills, especially elaboration and fluency. Build creative flexibility in accepting others’ edits! • Encourage “hitch-hiking” on

Botany Public School Wiki Purpose of the wiki The students at Botany Public School will be participating in a school wiki. A wiki is a contemporary web 2. 0 tool that the school has been trialing in class 4H with great success. It is designed to replace the existing Botany HomeLink that is currently hosted on the KidSpace Portal. Evidence suggests that wikis in education enhance students’ learning experiences and deepen the levels of learner’s engagement and collaboration within a digital learning environment. A wiki is essentially a web site where its content can be edited by anyone who has access to it, or certain parts of it. In its initial stage, the school wiki will provide a link for study between home and school, incorporating websites, homework pages or tasks related to current units of work. The Parents Page will host newsletters, advice on various educational issues, links to DET policies and technology tips etc. The wiki can only be accessed by Botany students/parents
