Hardwood chip export from Chile, Uruguay and Brail was up 43 percent in 2011 compared to 2009, as reported by the Wood Resource Quarterly. A clear majority of the increase was Eucalyptus chips destined for pulp mills in Japan and Europe. Seattle, USA. This would be an increase of seven percent from last year and of almost 60 percent higher than in 2006. Global Timber and Wood Products Market Update - a news brief from Wood Resources International LLC Reduced log export tariffs in Russia unlikely to boost the country’s log export volumes back up to historic levels, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly Export tariffs on logs shipped from Russia, the world largest log supplier, are set to be reduced as the country becomes a member of the WTO. The proposed new lower tariffs are not expected to increase export volumes to pre-tariff levels, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly. Seattle, USA. Log exports from Russia have plummeted the past five years mainly because of the country’s implementation of a log export tariff of 25% in 2008, as reported in the WRQ. Despite having suffered a sharp decline in global market share, Russia is still the largest exporter of softwood logs in the world. When Russia was accepted into the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in December of 2011, one of the requirements for the entry into the organization wa

The Pacific Northwest currently has the lowest biomass prices, slightly lower than the South, while the Northeast continues to have among the highest costs in the country. Seattle, USA. Prices for woody biomass in the US, whether sawmill byproducts, forest residues or urban wood waste, have been sliding for most of the past three years but were still higher in the 4Q/11 in most regions than they were five years ago, according to the North American Wood Fiber Review. The price drop seen in 2010 and 1H/2011 was mainly the result of lower prices for fossil fuels, parti

Global Timber and Wood Products Market Update - a news brief from Wood Resources International LLC The expansion of pulp production in China continues and the lack of domestic wood fiber sources has resulted in record imports of wood chips in 2011, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly Chinese pulp mills increasingly have to rely on imported wood chips for their wood fiber needs. In 2011, record volumes are being imported mainly from hardwood plantations in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Imported wood chip costs from Vietnam have gone up 40 percent in two years and are closing in on costs for chips shipped to Japan, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly. Seattle, USA. With the lack of sufficient quality and quantity of domestic wood fiber supply, new pulp mills in China are looking to expand importation of wood chips from plantation-rich countries in Southeast Asia to meet their growing fiber needs. In the 3Q/11, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia were the major suppliers to China

The Global Forest Industry in the 3Q/2011 Excerpts from the Wood Resource Quarterly Global timber markets With weaker demand for lumber around the world, sawlog prices fell in a majority of the 21 markets tracked by the WRQ. The Global Conifer Sawlog Price Index (GSPI) declined in the 3Q for the first time since the 1Q/09 to $90. 18/m3. With a few exceptions, prices fell in both local currencies and in US dollar terms. The only region that saw any substantial price increase in the 3Q was British Columbia, where prices were up 5-7 percent from the 2Q. This region has benefited from higher lumber exports and production has increased during 2011. Global pulpwood prices A strengthening of the US dollar against many currencies resulted in lower wood fiber costs in US dollar terms for the pulp industry in the 3Q. As a consequence, the Softwood Wood Fiber Price Index (SFPI) fell by less than one percent to $108. 90/odmt, which was the first decline since 2Q/10. In addition to the excha
