The simple result is that groups are often unable to benefit from information that is limited to one or a few members (unless the one or the few are leaders, confident, or known to be experts). The most obvious explanation is the simple fact that, as a statistical matter, common knowledge is more likely to be communicated to the group; more people have that knowledge, and hence it is more likely to be repeated.
