Yazd, a desert city located in the center of Iran has very long and fantastic history of coordination with nature to cope with very harsh climate of the region. Two, three or four sided traditional courtyard houses considered as the best prototype of sustainable architecture, which few follow logically. This paper presents traditional concepts using a passive solar house designed and built by present author in 2001. The research evaluated the family reactions, positive and negative aspects and performance features of the house under the concept of "post occupancy evaluation". The results indicated that family likes and dislikes are about the negative feeling of the cool draft in the sitting area, good lighting and views, some acoustical problems and positive feeling of cool air from the cold sunken courtyard. In general, the positive reflections of the family were much more than negative aspects.

Coandã flows have been the study of aircraft designers primarily for the prospect of achieving higher lift coefficient wings. Recently the environmental problem of noise pollution attracted further interest on the matter. The approach used is numerical; the computations were made using a large eddy simulation (LES) technique coupled with a Ffowcs-Williams-Hawkings (FWH) acoustic analysis. The spectrum of the flow was measured at three locations in the vicinity of the ramp showing that the low frequency region is dominant. The findings may be used as reference for the development of quiet aircraft that use super-circulation, as it is the case with the Upper Surface Blown (USB) configurations.

Function should always be regarded as the most important subject before the consideration of form and space be fulfilled. The design reaches its level of aesthetic when it is able to integrate all the required relationships in the design process with clear objectives. This can be seen clearly in the case of mud clay architecture in Hadhramout region, Yemen. The issue of material durability, traditional construction techniques, beauty, and affordability becomes the crucial factors that will be able to fulfill the user’s level of satisfaction, comfort, financial, and spiritual needs. Based on the architectural knowledge gained over the years, the Hadhrami local master builders have acquired brilliant skills and expertise to shape the regional environment and architectural heritage. They always consider ‘functional spaces’ before the buildings and houses are erected. This study investigates the use of mud clay architecture in relation to the design of the building function with its specif

This study presents the effects of countdown signals on the total start-up lost time of automobiles at signalized intersections based on the data collected at intersections in Bangkok, Thailand. This countdown signal is used to warn motorists in queue at the stop line during any red phase on when the green phase will be started. The data indicated that the countdown signals did not have any effects on the saturation headway of automobiles, but on the total start-up lost time. With the use of the countdown signals, the total start-up lost time was decreased from 4.3 seconds to 2.9 seconds, or was reduced by thirty-three percent. Therefore, the countdown signals may be used to increase the capacity of signalized intersections.

There are several methods available to analyze and evaluate the ultimate uplift capacity of pile in the sand layers, based on a homogeneous soil layer. This research compares the three estimations of ultimate uplift capacity of pile developed by Kulhawy et al (1979); Das (1983) and Chattopadhyay and Pise (1986). Since the field experiment did not reach the failure state, the Modified Mazurkiewicz method has been used to predict ultimate uplift capacity of piles. It is found that Kulhawy et al (1979) ultimate uplift capacity is closed to field data, providing the highest safety. In contrast, the ultimate uplift capacity by Chattopadhyay and Pise (1986) method shows the highest difference from the ultimate uplift capacity.

Pulsed Current Micro Plasma Arc welding (PCMPAW) process is an important joining process widely used in sheet metal fabrication industries. The paper focuses on developing mathematical models to predict grain size and ultimate tensile strength of pulsed current micro plasma arc welded Inconel 625 nickel alloy using Response Surface Method (RSM). The experiments were carried out based on Central Composite Design (CCD) with 31 combinations of experiments. The adequacy of the models is checked by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) technique. Hooke and Jeeves method is used to minimize grain size and maximize the ultimate tensile strength.

As designers of the built environment, architects have a tremendous opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of the ‘bottom billion’. However, in order to be effective agents of change, these designers must understand and appreciate the concept of social responsibility in architecture, and learn to implement it in their own work. This study seeks to determine the current state of social responsibility training in architectural education by examining the curriculum requirements set by a number of national architectural education accrediting boards to determine whether they include training in the precepts of social responsibility in design. Because these curriculum requirements largely determine the topics and concepts that students will be exposed to in the course of their architectural education, improving this aspect of architectural education is an important step toward maximizing the profession’s contribution to the global effort to improve the lives of the ‘bottom billio

In this study, the analysis is to measure lighting performance of single pedentive dome type in mosque design built during the Ottoman Empire in Istanbul, Turkey. The selected case studies are the Firuzaga and Orhan Gazi Mosque. This study investigates whether Turkish style’s pedentive dome mosque design provides efficient indoor daylighting in the Orhan Gazi Mosque in compression with the Firuzaga Mosque. This assessment is simulated during summer solstice occurred when the sun is perimetering at its most northern position along the Tropic of Cancer. This study applies simulation analysis using Autodesk software known as 3DStudio Max Design 2011 programme. The weather data file was used to provide weather information and climate changes of the study area. The analysis shows that both mosques have mostly an evenly distributed illuminance level with Scale 3, 4 and 5. The Orhan Gazi Mosque has slightly higher illuminance levels compared to those of the Firuzaga Mosque. The study conclude

Problem statement: Developing high-value nanostructured carbon from bio-char, for electrical and natural gas energy storage, is critical to improving the economic viability of thermochemical bioenergy and biofuel conversion processes. Approach: Here we show that chemical activation, using potassium or sodium hydroxide as catalysts, converted the biochar of distiller’s dried grains with soluble into activated carbon with high surface area (> 1500 m2/g). Results: The development of porosity by chemical activation using alkali hydroxides depends on type and dosage of activation catalysts; activation temperature and atmosphere conditions. Activated carbon samples with high mesoporous volume ( 1 ml/g), and nanostructure similar to activated graphene were prepared at activation temperature (1050 °C) and KOH loading (0.05 or 0.075 mol/g biochar). Conclusion: This protocol offers the potential to use other protein rich feedstocks for preparing nanostructured carbon, containing nanostructure si

The study examines how elderly visitors’ perception, interior environment, pathway design quality, and satisfaction are related in the context of interior environment and space planning of museums. This paper explores a theoretical as well as practical key issue in elderly pathway design in museums in Malaysia. The research intends to explore the elderly pathway design that interacts with the interior environment and space planning in museums. This is to fully understand the relationship between elderly visitors’ satisfaction and pathway design. This paper plans to answer critical questions; what is interior pathway design? How does the pathway design relate to the elderly visitors’ satisfaction? And what is the relationship between elderly visitors’ satisfaction, and pathway design quality? This study is one of the few studies focus on elderly people and pathway design. The empirical analysis carried out on 509 of elderly visitors in 21 museums in Malaysia allows us to confirm that th
