Dalry Nursery and Primary has held their annual Sports Day and, even though the weather was against them, the children still enjoyed their activities. The morning included a variety of sporting activities including throwing, jumping and agility. The Nursery held their sports during this time too. This had been organised by the Active Schools Co-ordinator and was a great success. The afternoon session included traditional races. All the activities added up to earn points for their house teams. The winning house this year was Kenbank and the girl sports champion was Sabrina in P6 and the boys sports champions was Michael in P7. The school would like to thank Newton’s shop in Dalry, Tesco and the Co-op for providing fruit an

Local photographer Phil McMenemy has been awarded the Scottish Nature Photography Award 2010 Natural Abstract Prize. Phil says; “As I hope you can imagine I am chuffed to bits and so proud. It continues to be an amazing journey I am having with my photography (and my life!). ” “The image (below) is one of those which I’ve had in my head for a few years and I was fortunate on this occasion for everything to come together to create the final image – it was one of those drooling moments, which as an artist don’t come along too often. ” “Seeing the competition my image was up against in this Award makes me feel humble, grateful and gives me a real sense of acknowledgement for my endeavours – things like this make my work so worthwhile. ” To see more of Phil’s work visit The Gallery at Laurieston, open Sundays and most Saturdays during the summer (01644 450 235) or visit www. pmc photography. co. uk. The CatStrand has won the Culture Champion award at the Dumfries & Galloway Life People of the Year 2010 awards. This is the first year of these awards which have been set up to recognise people and places around the region that play a vital role in making our area such a wonderful place both to live in and to visit. The award highlighted the vision, purpose and hard work that has gone into making the The CatStrand a reality. The CatStrand’s success is down to a number of key elements, among which are the hard work of the Glenkens Community & Arts Trust (GCAT) in getting the project up and running, the continuing input of a dedicated team of tireless staff and volunteers, and the venue’s adaptability; its ability to be so many things at once, from conference venue to theatre, sports hall to cinema makes it a hub of activity in a rural area where other similar resources are so limited. The CatStrand has also proved itself in the area of environmental sustainability by achieving Gold
