Guest Editorial Climate Justice Peggy M. Shepard and Cecil Corbin-Mark This special issue edited by West Harlem Environmental Action (WE ACT ) highlights climate justice: The need to develop studies, policies, and interventions that address the ethical and human rights dimensions of global warming, the disproportionate burden of legacy pollution, the unsustainable rise in energy costs for lowincome families, and the impacts of energy extraction, refining, and manufacturing on vulnerable communities. Climate change is the most significant social and political challenge of the 21st century. Carbon dioxide emissions caused by human activity are and will continue to impact the earth’s natural systems through global warming and sea level rise for generations to come. Climate researchers report that vulnerable communities, even in the most prosperous nations, will be the first and worst hit. In this country, the most impacted areas will be communities-of-color, Indigenous Peoples, and low-

TOPICAL MATERIALS FOR JUSTICE SEEKERS In conjunction with the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change, we are offering this group study module for use by faith communities. The approach to global climate change by the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change and Catholic Bishops’ Environmental Justice Program has been to focus on the themes of prudence, poverty and the common good, as well as Catholic Social Teaching. This module will expand and explore these principles and will have a strong emphasis on how climate change will impact the poor at home and abroad. The eight week program will draw out arguments for and against action and demonstrate—through both faith and science—the hazards to poor people of doing nothing. This module will include action items for stopping further global warming (mitigation) and what will be needed to help the poor at home and abroad who will be most impacted by climate change (adaptation). The 2 ½ hour sessions will cover • Catholic Theology on the Envir

His Holiness Benedict XVI: Why do some call him the Green Pope? By Cecilia Calvo and Dan Misleh WASHINGTON, DC (April 9, 2008): Several important themes are emerging from Pope Benedict’s teaching on the environment: urgency, threats to human life and dignity, and poverty. Pope Benedict XVI is likely to address care for creation and the urgency of addressing climate change during his journey of hope to the United States. Like Pope John Paul II before him, Pope Benedict calls us to care for creation to demonstrate respect for God the creator. In his first homily as pope, Benedict warned that today “the earth’s treasures no longer serve to build God’s garden for all to live in, but they have been made to serve the powers of exploitation and destruction. ” Pope Benedict is sometimes called the “Green Pope” because of his persistent calls for respect for all of creation. He is not embracing some new cause, but calling Catholics to recover and live out a duty anchored in Scripture, refle

CWS’s “Enough for All” campaign utilizes the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change to promote just and ecologically sustainable development. Love does no wrong to a neighbor. (Romans 13:10) Climate change can mean our neighbors go hungry because of drought, or lose their homes because of floods. In the face of the challenges posed by climate change, we are being called to grapple with the question "How much is enough?" and to reflect on our daily lives and our opportunities to change the ways our lives impact poor communities. Although you can reflect at any time, Lent offers an opportunity for you to join with CWS’s “Enough for All” campaign and others in the global church in a “Carbon Fast” to reduce your carbon use, save money, and help create a world where there is enough for all. Actions for your “Carbon Fast” In your home 1. Say goodbye to standby. Unplug electrical equipment, such as mobile phone chargers, when you are not using them. 2. Turn off ligh

Environmental Justice Program United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) The USCCB Environmental Justice Program began in the fall of 1993 as a response to the bishops’ call for greater attention to environmental concerns. Specifically, the USCCB Environmental Justice Program seeks to educate and motivate Catholics to a deeper respect for God’s creation, and to engage parishes in activities aimed at addressing environmental problems, particularly as they affect the poor. The USCCB Environmental Justice Program offers a distinctively Catholic contribution reflecting the Church’s teaching and values. Its foundation lies in Pope John Paul II’s World Day of Peace message and the U. S. Catholic bishops’ 1991 statement, Renewing the Earth. The USCCB Environmental Justice Program primarily serves Catholic dioceses, state Catholic conferences, and national Catholic organizations, and through them, parishes around the country. The Program carries out four primary tasks: SCHOLARS
