(from United States of America - copy of american professor s newspaper letter to the public) OUR LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE AUTOMOBILE We ve been depending on the internal combustion engine (ICE) for more than 100 years and over all that time the efficiency of the ICE has climbed to just under 15%. The remaining 85% is waste heat, unfired combustibles. YOUR PERSONAL COST? For every $10 bill you put in your gas tank, $8. 50 is wasted. It s not that 85% of that gasoline didn t produce anything, it means that only 15% was used to turn the wheels. The 85% produced waste heat, unburned chemicals. THE HID

` Maple Syrup Industry Feels the Heat of Global Warming ` Vermont Maple Syrup Industry Feels Heat Global warming is beginning to take a toll on Vermont s signature product -- maple syrup -- and the farmers and their families who produce it. Tim Branon, the eldest brother of an extended family that has made syrup for five generations inside the sugar house over a boiling process. But know they are doing in a gleaming stainless steel extractor made in nearby Rutland. It boils the sap, removing moisture and concentrating the maple sugar. He says he can show a production of 14,000 gallons of syrup this year. His brother is incharge of the farm. Tim is very well known of the preparation and he is the only person who opens the tap. "It s totally changed," said Tom. "In the 50s, 60s and even 70s we tapped by hand and used buckets, gathering by hand and using horse-drawn sleighs with wood fired evaporators. " Tim and his wife spends most of the time tramping through the snow-covered

` Debunking the Myth - only Industrial Agriculture can Feed the World - Organic Agriculture and Food Security Hold the agrichemicals: Organic ag could keep markets brimming with food. I ve written about it once already, but I want to return to The Economist s recent special series about how industrial agriculture is the true and only way to feed the 9 billion people who will inhabit the world by 2050. The framing, I think, is extremely interesting. The widely revered magazine identifies two strains of thought on the food system s future: one serious and one frivolous. The serious one -- made up of "food companies, plant breeders, and international development agencies" -- is "concerned mainly with feeding the world s growing population," which it plans to do "through the spread of modern farming, plant research and food processing in poor countries. " The frivolous one -- "influential among non-governmental organizations and some consumers" -"concentrates more on the food problems

~ DIRTY SECRETS of the Food Processing Industry We have always processed our Food. That is something that humans do. We cook our food, that is one type of processing, as well as ferment, grind, soak, bake and chop. All of these are types of food processing. TRADITIONAL FOOD PROCESSING Traditional processing has two functions: to make food more digestible and to preserve it for use during times when food is not readily available. This type of processing produced traditional foods like sausage and the old fashioned puddings and haggis, as well as grain products, dairy products, pickles, everything from wine and spirits to lacto fermented beverages. Farmers and artisans – bread makers, cheese makers, distillers, millers and so forth – processed these foods. They made delicious foods that retained their nutritional content and kept the profits on the farm and in the farming communities where it belonged. INDUSTRIAL FOOD PROCESSING Unfortunately, in modern times, we have largely rep

It’s a stunning fact: About 25 percent of commercially grown food goes to waste in this country. And you’ve probably seen a neighborhood fruit tree ripen beautifully, only to have all the fruit fall and rot on the ground. In our busy world, excess fruit and vegetables often go unused. This wasted food also burdens our solid waste system and creates odor and pest problems in our communities. At the same time, demand at local food banks has increased dramatically in recent years. ` Faith Based Community Initiatives How We Can Help Assisting a mother with feeding her children. Building a house for a senior citizen in a small town. Clearing a forest trail for all to enjoy. These are just some of the ways that we, the employees of USDA, serve people as part of our day-to-day jobs. And these are also just a few of the many ways that USDA employees can give back to our communities and serve others by volunteering. The President and First Lady have often said that each of us has a role to play in contributing to a better future for our country. That s why they have asked all Americans to join them in their summer of service initiative, United We Serve. I also strongly encourage all USDA employees, partners and grantees to join in volunteer service between now and September 11, a national day of remembrance and service. Many of our partners have posted numerous service opportunities at www. serve. gov and I would ask you to do the same. During these difficu

` Waste Not, Want Not - Gleaning in Washington, D. C In the battle against food waste and hunger, the ancient tradition of gleaning is gaining new admirers around America. Kathleen Maloney on how it s changed the D. C. food system. With the rise of obesity levels and food prices in the U. S. , very little attention has been paid to the efforts of the hundreds of thousands of volunteers who salvage millions of pounds of fresh food every year by gleaning-the collection of food left behind from a harvest-which provides those in need with free or inexpensive healthy produce they otherwise would have no access to. Parker Farms in Oak Grove, Virginia, has been welcoming gleaning groups since the late 1980s, to gather what is left behind from the harvests. "The biggest value to the farm is that product that was raised for the purpose of consumption, is consumed," said Rod Parker, general manager, who added that much of the food gleaners gather was initially left behind for purely cosmeti

` Fruit Tree Harvest Contributes to Classroom Snacks Orca s Snack Committee has been hard at work to provide local fresh fruit as part of the Snack Program. The Community Fruit Tree Harvest program (part of the Solid Ground Organization) and Sustainable South Seattle work with neighborhoods to harvest fruit from backyard gardens. Orca s own Michelle Perkin s states that "tons of fruit goes un-picked each year that could benifit countless individuals and organizations. " Both the Community Fruit Tree Harvest program and Sustainable South Seattle coordinate contact, harvest and distribution of pesticide free fruit to local food banks, churches, shelters and Orca s Snack Program. Thus far Michelle and Kate Malkin have averaged 2 deliveries of fruit each week to augment Orca s Snack Program. Special thanks goes out to Michelle, Kate, Tiana Colovos and Gabe from Sustainable South Seattle and Gail from The Community Fruit Tree Harvest for all their efforts to bring fresh fruit to Orca.
