ShoreTel Mobility Router System Admin Video Cheat Sheet! The blog on the Mobility Router as one of the options offered by ShoreTel for remote worker connectivity, generated a lot of email requests. I have an opportunity to install, configure and test the solution including the Roam Anywhere Client on an iPhone. It is really a great product and should be well received in the market for campus wireless as well as for the growing Mobile workforce. The attached video provides a quick overview of the SMR System Administration Interface and is not meant to be a tutorial on the subject, just a quick tour of the basic admin portal. System configuration is relatively straight forward, but very specific. Without getting into the infrastructure requirements, there are steps in the configuration that must be accomplished to bring up a useable platform. The SMR will connect to your PBX using both SIP Extensions and SIP trunks. Licenses, Authentication SSL Certifications, Time Servers, DID nu

Fax over IP or SIP trunks! Across the Internet even a G. 711 codec fax transmission is unpredictable. An excellent discussion of why faxing and modems don’t work well over VoIP can be found here. However, people often get perfectly good results on lightly loaded LANs. It still isn’t perfect, as a burst of data on the LAN can still upset things, but some people get results they can live with. Fax-over-Internet T. 38 pass-thru functionality within ShoreTel has arrived in 11! In detail: There are two conceptual methods of carrying virtually real-time fax-machine-to-faxmachine communication across packet networks: Fax relay, in which the T. 30 fax from the PSTN is demodulated at the sending gateway. The demodulated fax content is enveloped into packets, sent over the network, and remodulated into T. 30 fax at the receiving end. Fax pass-through, in which modulated fax information from the PSTN is passed in-band end-to-end over a voice speech path in an IP network. The following two

The client is important and we have been trying to link up for days! I also have to be at this next appointment on time! This is where a new ShoreTel 11 feature called “twinning” comes in. While talking to my very important client, I hit a button on my phone labeled MOVE and my cell phone starts ringing! I answer the cell phone, hang up the desk phone and continue my conversation as I make a mad dash for the parking lot! How kool is that? With the release of ShoreTel 11 you will find a new option under the ShoreTel Logo in the upper left hand corner of your call manager. Select “Additional phones” on the drop down list. This will provide another drop down list and you will select “configure additional phones”. This next screen will let you define two other phones that can rin

Generally you are concerned about QOS on both your Local Area network (LAN) and your Wide Area Network (WAN). Though the principles and configuration for COS and DSCP markings are easily discoverable by anyone who takes the time to research these concepts, their application on various network components can be bit more challenging. Generally, QOS on a LAN makes use of COS bits in the VLAN tag and DSCP in the TOS byte of an IP packets for WAN router access. How these markings interoperate with different manufactures however, is really interesting. Take for example, the installation of ShoreTel equipment on Ethernet switches provided by CISCO. Generally a CISCO QOS configuration is enabled with the command “mls qos” which is a global configuration command. What you need to understand is that this command calls into action a wid

Fixed Wireless Convergence and Mobility Options for VoIP We have been steadily moving through a range of mobility options on our way to achieving true fixed mobile convergence. We want to take our Office Extension away on our Cell phones and have the same functionality away from the office as we do in the office! Originally, people forwarded their office extensions to their Cell phones. Not the best solution, but clearly the easiest to set up. The problem however, is that the caller to your office extension might end up anywhere including your cell phone voice mail. So much for a maintaining a business presence! ShoreTel addressed that issue, but adding a couple of useful features. For example, you can use External Assignment. Someone calls your desk phone and you can have it reassigned to your home phone or cell phone. The benefit over call forwarding alone, is that the call profiles you set up for each of your call handling modes are followed as if the caller were going to you

ShoreTel Collaboration Server a new Version 12 Appliance! Version 12 of ShoreTel is all about Web Collaboration and enhanced Unified Communications functionality! For Example, ShoreTel has had an IM capability since Version 8, but historically you required a Microsoft OCS server to enjoy this feature. Not that Microsoft OCS is a bad solution, but it is really over kill for a functionality as simple as Internet Messaging! The ShoreTel Professional Communicator enabled the IM function as an integrated, single desktop client and many users wanted that functionality without having to grow the expense of a Microsoft OCS server. Enter the concept of a new ShoreTel Collaboration Server with all the bells and whistles disguised as an “appliance”! The New ShoreTel Collaboration Server, available with Version 12, provides a rich set of features that include Audio Conferencing, Internet Messaging, Desktop Sharing, Web Collaboration and Microsoft Outlook integration. Not only is the functionali

Route Points, IRN’s and Media Streams! Lately the subject of ShoreTel Route Points and IRN’s has been getting a lot of “mind share” from those working with them. Two questions: How many Route Points can a ShoreTel server support? How many IRN’s can an ECC support? How many DNIS numbers can a ShoreTel support. Seems like a simple set of questions, but the answers are something like “herding cats”. Route Points are used in a ShoreTel system to accomplish call routing and TAPI connectivity between the IPBX and the Enterprise Contact Center, for example. Let us assume, for purpose of illustration, that you have a large call center and you want to track the effectiveness of your advertising campaigns. You determine to do this by tracking DNIS numbers. Each DNIS represents a different advertising campaign. Recently, I came across a client who was creating a route point – IRN pair for each DNIS number. Nothing particularly wrong with this, but using the DNIS map would have required on

ShoreTel Enhanced Workgroup Services! Historically, there were three services in the ShoreTel architecture thatwere no distributed to other servers. To over simplify, this meant thatif the HQ server (read primary server) was unavailable, the services thatwere not distributed would not function. The three services were Route Points, Account Codes and Workgroups. For example, if a user group was set to “forced” account code verification and the server was unavailable, thatservice would failand the effected user would not be able to place a call. Like wise, ifthe HQ server were unavailable, Workgroup services would fail. ( The “best practice’deployment strategy was to backup a Workgroup with a “huntgroup”given thatthe HG ran on a switch and not a server, itwould continue to function in this scenario. Calls targeting agents in a Workgroup would fail over to a hunt group thatwould target the same list of agents). ShoreTel has steadily progressed the distribution of these services out f

ShoreTel Route a Call based on Area Code or Mood Maybe we could use ShoreTel “Call handling modes” to get the job done? Features like “Personal Operator” and “Find/Follow Me” are offered to callers once they are in your Voice message box and they can be very useful by offering callers options beyond leaving a message at the beep! Call handling modes, however, can only be applied after the call is answered! What is required in the application described above, is the ability to manipulate a “ringing” telephone call and redirect that call before the call is answered. So how would you route a call based on the callers Area Code? ShoreTel has a new feature entitled “personalized call handling”. This is a powerful feature that can be used to manipulate a phone call before it is answered. You can route a call based on a number of conditions including a “phone number match”, the fact that you are already on the phone, based on the number the caller dialed or DNIS and even by the time of day
