However, in a context of ecological, food and energy crises, the most pressing issue regarding reinvestment is not how much, but how. This report explores how States can and must achieve a reorientation of their agricultural systems towards modes of production that are highly productive, highly sustainable and that contribute to the progressive realization of the human right to adequate food. Drawing on an extensive review of the scientific literature published in the last five years, the Special Rapporteur identifies agroecology as a mode of agricultural de

Fields of Poison: California Farmworkers and Pesticides Executive summary Authors Margaret Reeves and Kristin Schafer, Pesticide Action Network North America Kate Hallward, United Farm Workers of America Anne Katten, California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation Agriculture is still one of the most hazardous occupations in the U. S. The death rate among agricultural workers nationwide was an estimated 20. 9 per 100,000 workers in 1996 compared to the average for all industries of 3. 9 per 100,000 workers. In addition to long workdays and high risk of physical injury, the nation s estimated 2. 5 million farmworkers face a greater risk of pesticide exposure than any other segment of the population. In California, the state with the largest agricultural economy in the country, farm work is conducted by a workforce of about 600,000 men and women. From 1991 to 1996 the California Environmental Protection Agency s Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) reported 3991 cases of occupationa

Source: IAASTD Global Report Figure 3-6, from Altieri, M. A. , and C. I. Nicholls, 1999. Biodiversity, ecosystem function, and insect pest management in agricultural systems. p. 6984. In W. W. Collins and C. O. Qualset(ed) Biodiversity in Agroecosystems. CRC Press, NY. Agroecology is the science behind sustainable agriculture. Drawing on the natural and social sciences, agroecology provides a framework for assessing four key systems properties of agriculture: productivity, resilience, sustainability and equity. Taking account of agriculture’s multi-functionality, agroecology measures sustainability in terms of social, environmental and economic impacts. Because these impacts are context-dependent, agroecology is a place-based, pragmatic science, uniquely suited to delivering on the promise of propoor develop
