With this project we intended to make a study about the use of internet inside the school system. The research is divided in three main parts: the use of the internet in the classroom; the role of the executive board in the implementation and management of the internet; the role of the pedagogic board in its use. We developed this study in the schools with secondary education in the municipality of Alcobaça.
We verified that students use the internet mainly to search for information in order to develop their projects, as well as to communicate with each other or with their teachers. As for the teachers, they use the internet to search for materials that may help them to prepare their lessons and also to communicate with their pairs or with their pupils. One of the teachers main concerns is the possibility of plagiarising that internet makes available to everyone. The main reason for its role in the methodology is connected with the motivation it arises in the students. The individual use of the internet, both by students and teachers, is mostly associated with leisure. Schools try to provide rooms or cyber spots where its members can use the internet and manage to get the necessary equipments by enrolling in projects. However, the number of these cyber spots is considered deficient, due to the restrictions of the school budget. As for the web site, its aim is to publicise the school activities. The teachers and clerks are in general considered to have the basic knowledge to be able to use the internet. In the opinion of those who were interviewed the use of the internet stands for an advantage in the learning process, not only by making communication easier and more effective but also by allowing the development of language skills; the internet contributes to the interconnection of many different subjects because it permits the study in several areas of knowledge at the same time; the schools seem to be better prepared to develop their students’ technological skills.
In short, we may conclude that the schools with secondary education in the municipality of Alcobaça use the internet for pedagogic, administrative and communicative purposes.
