National SustainableAgriculture Information Service www. attra. ncat. org Introduction In 1994, world-wide production of goat milk was approximately 10. 5 million tons. In the United States at that time, there were approximately one million dairy goats producing 600,000 tons of milk, about 300 known dairy goat businesses, and at least 35 known commercial goat-cheese makers. These cheese makers produced about 640 tons of U. S. goat cheeses, while at least another 650 tons of goat cheese were imported that year from France alone. (Haenlein, 1996) LIVESTOCK PROD

Not only do they feed on plants, but they also produce honeydew, which detracts from the plants appearance and attracts other insects and sooty mold. Whiteflies can also transmit plant viruses. The mere presence of whiteflies in a greenhouse will stop customers from buying your product. Courtesy of Hercules Incorporated Wilmington, Delaware Several species of whiteflies attack greenhouse plants, and they typically have a wide host range and resist insecticides. Greenhouse tomatoes and poinsettias are especially plagued by whiteflies. The most common whiteflies on greenhouse crops are the greenhouse whitefly

Introduction E damame, translated as “beans on branches,” is the Japanese name for green vegetable soybeans. (1) These are the immature, green form of edible soybeans. Edible or food-grade soybeans differ from field soybeans by being larger-seeded, milder-tasting, more tender, and more digestible. They also contain a lower percentage of gas-producing starches. Otherwise, the nutritional value of edible and field soybeans is comparable. Edamame is a traditional food popular in Asia. In Japan, it is served boiled in salt water as a snack or appetizer. In China and other areas, the shelled, raw edible soybeans are cooked with meat or mixed with other vegetables for various dishes. Edamame is becoming increasingly popular in the United States as consumers become more interested in Asian cuisine. Production Edamame production is similar to that of traditional grain soybeans, although planting techniques and equipment need to accommodate the larger seed size of edamame. (2) As with a

By Preston Sullivan NCAT Agriculture Specialist July 2003 CONSERVATION TILLAGE The term conservation tillage refers to a number of strategies and techniques for establishing crops in a previous crop’s residues, which are purposely left on the soil surface. The principal benefits of conservation tillage are improved water conservation and the reduction of soil erosion. Additional benefits include reduced fuel consumption, reduced compaction, planting and harvesting flexibility, reduced labor requirements, and improved soil tilth. Two of the most common conservation til

INTRODUCTION By Preston Sullivan NCAT Agriculture Specialist July 2002 STORED GRAIN PEST MANAGEMENT Effective control of stored-grain pests with minimal pesticide use requires an IPM approach combining sanitation, monitoring, and other preventive practices. Sanitation involves cleaning bins, elevators, and other conveyers before new grain is put in storage—the goal being to eliminate insect eggs, pupae, and dormant adults that will eat and grow in the stored grain. Traps are excellent for monitoring pest levels. Many traps contain pheromone (sex scent) lures.

A PRODUCTION INTRODUCTION The rise in demand for organic dairy feed makes alfalfa an attractive crop for some organic farmers. According to the USDA’s organic standards, cows producing organic milk must be fed organic feed. The decision to grow organic alfalfa depends on the potential profitability, taking into account price premium, increased cost of production, markets, and transportation. Federal laws regulating the growing, labeling, and marketing of organic pr
