This publication presents an overview of greenhouse production systems and profiles several farmers raising organic vegetables in greenhouses. It is hoped this will give new growers ideas of how to set up their systems, and provide more experienced farmers with examples of alternative methods of production. The term greenhouse means different things to different people. A greenhouse used to be a structure formed of glass, with a heating (and usually cooling) system that was used yearround, but especially in winter. Then came houses built of thermoplastic (Plexiglas and others), followed by Qu

Because every field, orchard, landscape, and garden is different, there is no way any or all of these management practices will achieve perfect deer control, but they should help reduce the damage. Usually, deer damage plants by browsing on new vegetation during the growing season. However, when

The types of information farmscapers need to consider is outlined and emphasized. Appendices have information about various types and examples of successful “farmscaping” (manipulations of the agricultural ecosystem), plants that attract beneficials, pests and their predators, seed blends to attract beneficial insects, examples of farmscaping, hedgerow establishment and maintenance budgets, and a sample flowering period table. Updated by Steve Diver, NCAT Agriculture Specialist, and Tracy Mumma, March 2003 ORGANIC & LOW-SPRAY PEACH PRODUCTION Introduction Peaches can be difficult to produce even under good conditions and with a full spray schedule. At least two key insect pests and several serious diseases present formidable obstacles to organic or low-spray production. Nevertheless, with proper management, resistant cultivars, and a good site, growers can greatly reduce—and in some cases eliminate—their reliance on synthetic pesticides. Because of new directions in research emph

ATTRA // Organic Tomato Production Page 1 By Steve Diver, George Kuepper, and Holly Born NCAT Agriculture Specialists October 1995 Revised March 1999 Organic Farming and Certification Programs As defined by the USDA in 1980 (1), organic farming is a system that excludes the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and growth regulators. Organic farmers rely heavily on crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures, legumes, green manures, organic wastes, and mineral-bearing rocks to feed the soil and supply plant nutrients. Insects, weeds, and other pests are managed by mechanical cultivation and cultural, biological, and biorational controls. Organic certification emerged as a marketing tool during the 1970s and 80s to ensure foods produced organically met specified standards of production. The Organic Foods Production Act, a section of the 1990 Farm Bill, enabled the USDA to develop a national program of universal standards, certification accreditation, and food labeling. In ear
