September 2009 “This I Believe” On Monday, September 21st, students gathered in the Chapel Basement to hear faculty and staff discuss what inspires their sense of purpose and passion at an event named “This I Believe. ” The panelists were Professors Jonathan Brumberg-Kraus, Ed Tong, Bob Morris, Gabriela Torres, Marcus Allen and Deans Craig Andrade and Lee Williams. After a brief introduction by Vereene Parnell, Dean of Service, Spirituality and Social Responsibility, each panelist spoke openly about what inspires them and where their beliefs lie, both spiritual and otherwise. They spoke about their childhoods, family and the events that shaped their lives. One panelist spoke about Buddhism, while another about Christianity and yet another about the importance of face-to-face communication. The audience was able to learn more about each panelist by hearing about the beliefs that they hold true. Throughout the panel members of the audience were encouraged to speak to the person next

JULY/AUGUST 2009 President Crutcher and the Wheaton Lyon at the annual Staff Kickoff Staff Kickoff 2009! Staff Council in collaboration with the Office of the President kicked off the new academic year with a bang. President Crutcher thanked and encouraged the staff for showing leadership and commitment to the college and colleagues in numerous ways. He pointed out how affordability is critical, and that our increased commitment to financial aid has contributed to making it possible to welcome the 440 new students to the community. Also, the Wheaton Fund has exceeded their goal of raising more than $3. 7 million. The President challenged us to ensure a quality educational experience for our students in order to retain them, and pointed out that our two new Vice-Presidents, Linda Eisenmann and Lee Williams, working with Gail Berson will be focusing on the overall quality of the student experience and aim at improving student retention.
