1 Peshawa Mahmod Groundwater Directorate of Sulaimani City Groundwater pollution in sulaimani City/Kurdistan Region-Iraq Introduction A report recently issued by the United Nations Environment Program stressed the need for a fast response to Iraq’s environmental crisis, and highlighted the problems of war damage, an increase in sewage and medical waste and in rubbish piling, among other issues. The report said epidemics would follow if these were not addressed soon. The report also said that water and sanitation systems urgently need improved maintenance to prevent further pollution of the environment. These environmental problems deserve serious examination, particularly because losses resulting from air pollution and health problems are very costly to the national economy.
