` Neurological Development of Children using the Arts School Program Why the Program Works Kindergarten has rhythm Rhythm. JPGThe OMA program was designed around children’s neurological development. When children first come to school, they have a facility for rote memory, and many simple facts have been imprinted in their minds through songs and musical games if they have been fortunate enough to be exposed to these things. Upon entering kindergarten, the OMA curriculum will begin to use rhythm as a tool to develop memory and intellect. Although short-term memories can be stored as images, they are often stored as sounds – especially when remembering words. Short-term memory has the capacity to hold about seven pieces of information. But when related pieces are linked together, they can be stored of information are remembered as a single piece, and thus the volume of material that can be stored increases exponentially. Information spoken in a rhythmic pattern will easily hold tog

Encouraging Your Teen s Musical Talents Brought to you by MENC: The National Association for Music Education. Is your teen a music buff? Encourage his interests and talents with the following tips. 1. Expose your teen to all kinds of music. Try listening to music that s outside your usual range: classical (opera, symphonic, chamber music), pop, country, folk, ethnic music of other cultures, jazz -- you name it! 2. Seek out live music. Ask your son or daughter to attend a concert with you -- let her choose the event. Also consider visiting local clubs and churches noted for gospel, baroque, or contemporary music. 3. Participate, participate, participate! Encourage your child to be in the school chorus or band. Have her invite friends over to play together. She can also share her talents in the community through your church, in talent shows and youth orchestras, or by volunteering to play at nursing homes. 4. Have your child play D. J. Your teen can prepare tapes for you to

` MUSIC INSTRUCTION AIDS VERBAL MEMORY Those piano lessons pay off in unexpected ways: According to a new study, children with music training had significantly better verbal memory than their counterparts without such training. Plus, the longer the training, the better the verbal memory. These findings underscore how, when experience changes a specific brain region, other skills that region supports may also benefit –- a kind of cognitive side effect that could help people recovering from brain injury as well as healthy children. The research appears in the July issue of Neuropsychology, which is published by the American Psychological Association (APA). Psychologists at the Chinese University of Hong Kong studied 90 boys between age six and 15. Half had musical training as members of their school’s string orchestra program, plus lessons in playing classical music on Western instruments, for one to five years. The other 45 participants were schoolmates with no musical training.

“Every student in the nation should have an education in the arts. ” This is the opening statement of “The Value and Quality of Arts Education: A Statement of Principles,” a document from the nation’s ten most important educational organizations, including the American Association of School Administrators, the National Education Association, the National Parent Teacher Association, and the National School Boards Association. The basic statement is unlikely to be challenged by anyone involved in education. In the harsh reality of limited time and funding for instruction, however, the inclusion of the arts in every student’s education is sometimes relegated to a distant wish rather than an exciting reality. It doesn’t have to be that way! If public education is to help all our children reach their individual potential and serve the collective good of our society, music must be a part of the education of all American children. The No Child Left Behind act defines “core academic subjec

` Music benefits the brain, research reveals Northwestern University scientists have pulled together a review of research into what music -specifically, learning to play music -- does to humans. The result shows music training does far more than allow us to entertain ourselves and others by playing an instrument or singing. Instead, it actually changes our brains. The paper, just published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience, is a compilation of research findings from scientists all over the world who used all kinds of research methods. The bottom line to all these studies: musical training has a profound impact on other skills including speech and language, memory and attention, and even the ability to convey emotions vocally. So what is it that musical training does? According to the Northwestern scientists, the findings strongly indicate it adds new neural connections -- and that primes the brain for other forms of human communication. In fact, actively working with musical sounds

The nation’s top business executives agree that arts education programs can help repair weaknesses in American education and better prepare workers for the 21st century. — “The Changing Workplace is Changing Our View of Education. ” – Business Week Casals says, music fills him with the wonder of life and the ‘incredible marvel’ of being a human. Ives says it expands his mind and challenges him to be a true individual. Bernstein says it is enriching and ennobling. To me, that sounds like a good cause for making music and the arts an integral part of every child’s

Those students who had been given music lessons recalled significantly more w
