Learning through landscapes Up, over and under! or technique (and then celebrating their success with them!) will not only boost a child’s physical capabilities but increase their confidence too. So what do young children want – and need? Simply observing their current play will give you lots of ideas. For example, young children love jumping off points. They are drawn to raised levels to walk along. They like to be up high and look down – a mound to us is a mountain for a two year old! Whether you want to rethink how your current outdoor features are used, or you are planning new ground works, this Playnotes can help, as it looks at creating and using stimulating and challenging landscape features, including: • mounds, banks and gradients • tunnels • paths and surfaces • rills, gullies and beaches • walls. Mounds, banks and gradients Outdoor spaces in early years settings are often topographically dull – flat, mainly grass and tarmac. Even when full of exciting resources and ent

Sensory Trust information sheet Access is a chain of events that begins with the decision to visit and ends with the visitor’s safe return home. No improvement should ever be made in isolation. For instance, a new accessible visitor centre may fail to improve visitor numbers if there is no accessible car parking nearby, and it has not been promoted in the right way to the right people. Think links. Failing to provide for every link in the visitor experience can mean that the visit may end with the visitor feeling frustrated, or the visit may simply not happen. The Access Chain is not a model for the order in which improvements should be undertaken. For instance, there may be little to gain from improving public transport links to a site that is completely inaccessible. The Access Chain The Access Chain

YOUTH DAY (YOUTH AND HEALTH) - CULTURAL RESOURCES 1 YOUTH DAY (YOUTH AND HEALTH) CULTURAL RESOURCES Sunday, October 24, 2010 Tera W. Hunter, Guest Lectionary Cultural Resource Commentator Professor of History and African-American Studies, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ I. Historical Background The vitality of health among youth has been a key to survival since the dawning of the African slave trade. Traders targeted young people in their prime who were hearty enough to endure the rough Middle Passage and harsh conditions of forced labor in the Americas. As a result, young people made up a substantial portion of those forcibly taken as slaves. The same qualities that made youth good prospects as slave labor also gave them the extra will to withstand and overcome oppression. Most slave masters fed their slaves and took care of their health only to the minimal degree necessary to protect their monetary investments. Slaves were typically allotted fatback, cornmeal, salt, and mo

Tips for Starting Faith-Based Community Gardens from Montgomery Victory Gardens Starting a garden with your faith-based community is a deeply rewarding and satisfying experience. Current faith-based community gardens in Montgomery County include Northwood Presbyterian in Silver Spring, St. Luke s Episcopal in Bethesda, B nai Israel in Rockville, Salem United Methodist in Brookeville, and Mt. Calvary Baptist in Rockville. All were established in the past 1-2 years. The following tips are offered to you from their experience: Why start a garden? The most important motivation for faith-based communities to start gardens is the opportunity to help those in need, especially during these difficult times, but other reasons include educating young people on healthy eating habits and where their food comes from, healing the earth, and providing a green space to benefit the local neighborhood. How many people does it take to start a garden? While you will want to involve as many of your co
