The sheer quantity of Beatles memorabilia plastering
Chris Carter's walls is astonishing.
I'm slightly embarrassed
when I look at a framed record of George Harrison's "All
Things Must Pass," which critics say could be the finest postBeatles release from any of its
members, and admit that until
then, I had never heard of it.
Carter smiles.
He realizes that he's dealing with a
novice.
Carter, 47, is the host of
America's longest running
Beatles radio show, "Breakfast
with the Beatles," which airs
Sunday mornings from 9 a.
m.
to noon on 95.
5 FM KLOS.
A Wayne, New Jersey native and a Sherman Oaks resident for the past twenty years,
Carter began hosting the show
in 2001 after the death of longtime host and show founder Deirdre O'Donoghue.
Since
then he has survived the brief
cancellation of his show, found
a new and permanent home,
made legions of loyal fans at a
new station, and stamped his
own unmistakable mark on
Beatles history.
But how is it possible for a
show about one band to stay
fresh for so long? The way Carter sees it, when you're dealing
with the best, you don't have to
try very hard.
"There never has and
there never will be anything
like the Beatles again," Carter states.
"They're like Elvis
times ten.
They're the kings of
entertainment.
"
Instead of sticking solely to
the canonical Beatles songs
found on their albums, Carter
likes to give his listeners variety by playing b-sides, alternative takes, solo work, and live
performances.
"I play the best of everything," he says.
Carter also keeps an almost
encyclopedic amount of Beatles facts and trivia in his head
something his listeners call
in and take advantage of daily.
On top of acting as a DJ-cumGoogle for the litany of queries
on obscure Beatle-mania, Carter is something of an on-the-air
professor, helping his studentlisteners to better understand
their collective favorite group.
"I put the Beatles' music
in context, go into what they
were thinking," explains Carter.
"It's a little bit more to help
expand their knowledge.
"
Carter's career as America's
top Beatles DJ was put on hiatus when in the fall of 2006, the
show's longtime station, KLSX,
cancelled the show.
When shock jock Howard
Stern left terrestrial radio that
year to join Sirius Satellite radio, a subscription service,
the radio station lost one of its
most popular shows and was
forced to make changes.
"They lost Howard," Carter
recalls, "and they got in a jam.
They had to re-structure.
So
they turned the weekends into
infomercials.
"
But thanks to Carter's loyal
fans, he was back on the air in
less than two months KLOS
stepped up to house the show
when KLSX could no longer
accommodate.
"People petitioned.
Everybody was outraged.
Literally, thousands of calls," Carter

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa attended the event, which

and pay homage, not only to
the victims of the Armenian

victims of the Jewish Holocaust," said Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Western Diocese of the Armenian Church
