Game designer David Eckelberry offers the latest in our series of monthly free adventures. This original Dungeons & Dragons scenario is suitable for a party of four to six characters of 5th to 7th level.

The great sphinx Ujaset died last night. Before that time, the people of the surrounding land reported the occasional appearance of a translucent winged leonine figure in the skies above. Local folklore held that this beast sometimes halted the progress of travelers to trouble them with its clever questions, generously rewarding those who could answer the sphinx?s riddles. Perhaps it?s this very legend that has drawn the player characters to the region. . . .

The road stretches out as it has for the last hour. A cold wind brushes across your face, and while you look for its source, a low moan echoes. Staring into the twilight ahead, a pale, flickering form can be seen.

At first you see a the noble visage of a bearded man?s head, twisted with sorrow. Then it?s the body of a powerful lion, ten feet long and complete with swishing tail. Finally there?s the great hawklike wings greater than any bird. The form twinkles, transculent, coalescing into a single being.

"Now you dare the last riddle of Ujaset," moans the voice. . . .

In the light of a brilliant new star, a young man arrived mysteriously in the hamlet of Elton. Seemingly in need of aid but unable to communicate with the natives, he was adopted by the village, whose people quickly grew to love him. But after a few short weeks, he was kidnapped in a raid by horrid, buglike monsters led by a blue-skinned ogre. Can the PCs save him before the leader can carry out his nefarious plans? Drop this free online adventure by Ramon Arjona into an area of your campaign world where an isolated town might exist. Suitable for four 5th-level characters.

One night, a bright light appeared in the night sky above the small hamlet of Elton. This brilliant celestial event awakened the residents of the village, who emerged from their dwellings to marvel at the new "star" in the sky. Upon reaching the village common, the townsfolk found a young man, barely more than a boy, lying naked and shivering on the ground. Though he resembled an elf, there was an almost unearthly beauty about him. They asked him who he was, but his reply came in a musical tongue they had never heard before.

Seeing that the stranger was weak, cold, and in need of help, the people of Elton found clothes for him and provided him with food and shelter. Calling him "the gift of the star," they accepted him into their community and soon grew to love him.

But after only a few short weeks, disaster struck. A band of horrid, buglike creatures led by a blue-skinned ogre raided the town and kidnapped the young man. Can the PCs find and rescue him before his abductors can carry out ther nefarious plans?

The number of ships docking at the coastal town of Seawell has suddenly dropped, and raids by the local lizardfolk are increasing. The missing ships were all approaching from the reef side of the peninsula, so something must have happened to the lighthouse that normally guides ships safely past the danger. But what? Drop the latest miniadventure for D&D v.3.5 by Robert Wiese into any coastal area that features a peninsula. Suitable for four 1st-level characters.

Though small, Seawell is a prosperous trading town with a good location on the coast. Next to it is a long peninsula that features mostly swamplike terrain. The inhabitants of this peninsula include tribes of lizardfolk, plus several kinds of reptiles and amphibians. Most of these creatures don't bother the town, and Seawell's militia is experienced at repulsing raids by the more aggressive lizardfolk.

A large reef extends the entire length of the peninsula on the side away from Seawell. This great wall of coral is a favorite site for fishermen, but it has always presented a serious hazard to ships approaching from that direction. Thus, about 45 years ago, the people of Seawell built a lighthouse on a small promontory near the reef, about 200 yards from the shoreline. Operated by a family that lived inside it, this lighthouse ensured that ships could easily steer clear of the reef.

A few weeks ago, ships stopped arriving from that direction. Three ships are now overdue, and the people of Seawell have begun to suspect foul play. Thus far, however, they have not been able to investigate because of increased raiding by the lizardfolk. Something has stirred them up, and the town militia has been too busy repulsing raids to mount an expedition to the reef.

The unusually violent storms in these parts often drive motley collections of intelligent beings to take shelter together for a time. The tradition of storm-peace ensures that all grudges are suspended for the duration of the storm. But some shelters are safer than others, and not all beings honor the storm-peace.

The PCs discover hidden perils inside the isolated tor where they have taken shelter from a storm. What secrets does this place hold, and what evil creatures plan to make it their own? Can the PCs solve the mystery of Hightower before the storm ends?

Long ago, a small but mighty humanoid kingdom existed in what is now the local wilderness. Bugbear and ogre warriors fought brutal wars of expansion, earning great fame and amassing considerable fortunes from their predations. Those who died in battle were buried in large tomb complexes dug into hillsides and honored as patrons of the living. Among these tombs was the large tor known as Hightower. Though it was neither the largest nor the most famous of the kingdom's tombs, Hightower did represent a typical example of this kind of structure.

As happens to all such nations, the cruel humanoid kingdom eventually fell to a more powerful foe that razed all its cities and outlying fortifications. Of the tombs, only Hightower escaped destruction -- largely because it was an unimportant monument in a remote location. A few tribes of humanoids that survived the devastation tried to use it as a fortress, but the humans with whom they clashed defeated them soundly and sealed the entrance with a huge, round stone to ensure that the tor could no longer be used as a base. Since then, Hightower has served as a landmark for travelers in the know, but it has otherwise been largely forgotten.

But the electrical storms that have plagued the area in recent days have been quite severe, and a few weeks ago, a stray lightning bolt broke open the stone seal. Tonight, yet another terrible storm is sweeping through the wilderness, driving all creatures to take shelter where they can find it. Hightower looms on the horizon, and its door is no longer blocked. Will the PCs dare to enter its silent halls?   [Moins]

Este curso es una iniciativa nuestra, los administradores de sinwindows, con el objetivo de mostrar qué son los inicios con Ubuntu y cómo podemos realizar las
tareas que realizábamos con windows en Ubuntu. Algunos dirán que Ubuntu no es
una distribución muy parecida a windows y tienen razón, el cambio es razonable.
Pero tiene algo que muchas otras distribuciones envidiarían, y es su comunidad. La
comunidad de Ubuntu es enorme y ofrece un gran soporte a usuarios noveles (de ahí
ha salido este curso). Por eso, usaremos Ubuntu para el desarrollo de este curso.
Es importante remarcar que el paso a GNU/Linux (Ubuntu en este caso), como
cualquier cambio de la vida, requiere un tiempo para adaptarse. Nadie nació sabiendo
conducir. Todo se consigue con práctica y hábito, incluido el manejo de Ubuntu.
Cuando lleve un cierto tiempo usando Ubuntu verá que nada es tan complicado como
le parecía en un principio e incluso se aventurará a probar cosas por ud. mismo.

Seguramente, encontrará algunas cosas de Ubuntu muy útiles y otras no tanto.
Debemos recordar que Ubuntu tiene fallos, y que estos fallos intentan subsanarse a
cada nueva versión.
También debemos recordar que el Software Libre vive por los usuarios que
trabajamos en él. Al igual que nosotros redactamos este manual, cada usuario puede
contribuir a la mejora del Software Libre en general y de Ubuntu en particular por
ejemplo, traduciendo aplicaciones, exponiendo tutoriales de instalación/configuración, etc.

Por último, agradecer a todas las personas de la comunidad de Ubuntu que ayudan y
trabajan día a día para que usuarios como nosotros nos sintamos a gusto en un
sistema libre. Sin ellos, este curso hubiera sido imposible.
