church.
Barry Mizen, Jimmys father said how grateful he

the appeal so well.
Judicial Review Appeal
reaches £2,000
Campaigners for Independents to Save Queen
Mary’s Hospital are delighted with the
continuing response to their appeal to raise
£75,000 to fight the planned closures of Queen
Mary’s accident and emergency and other vital
services by means of a judicial review in the High
Court.
Party leader, Chiselhurst based John HemmingClark said that after just one month £2,000 has
already been raised, together with many letters of
support.
He said, “We are continuing to get a great
response to this appeal from people who live or
work in the area.
The most heart-warming letter to have been
received so far has come from a gentleman who
donated £40 from his war disablement pension
and who wrote, “We hope you obtain the amount
you require to take this matter, which is so
important to so many of us, to court.
” How can
you not be moved by such comments from those
who most need Queen Mary’s services?
We do have a long way still to go and I would
urge everyone to donate as much as they can to
ensure that this outrageous and preordained
decision can go before one of the highest courts
in the land.

COMMUNITY HOSPITALGreenwich Teaching Primary Care Trust
(GTPCT) recently announced the start of its
four week consultation on the services to be
provided at the new Eltham Community
Hospital.
The PCT says ‘Local people have expressed
a strong desire to see a new community
hospital developed on the old Eltham &
Mottingham Cottage Hospital site just off
Eltham High Street and the Department of
Health earlier this year pledged over four
million pounds to support the scheme.
Greenwich Teaching PCT is now consulting
on the sorts of services that should be provided
at the new hospital.
’
The services that could be provided in the
future are 40 intermediate care beds (half way
between hospital and home) a GP practice
open 8am to 8pm 7 days a week, a local urgent
care centre for treating minor illnesses and
injuries services for people with long-term
conditions to save them travelling all the way
to hospital treatments and therapies for back
and neck pain, sports injuries, wounds, leg
ulcers and similar minor surgery and foot
surgery blood tests, heart function tests and x
rays maternity care (ante and post natal care)
The consultation starts on 15th September
for four weeks and closes on 13th October
2008 and there will be five public meetings.
All
residents are being encouraged to attend, have
their say and learn more about the proposals.

Dr Dermot Kenny, a GP at Courtyard
Surgery and Chair of the GP commissioning
group for the Community Hospital in Eltham
added:
“The new community hospital will mean
that people in Eltham will be able to have
access to a greater range of services nearer to
home, including access to a GP practice from
8am-8pm every day, advice for healthy living,
support for long-term illnesses and a local
urgent care centre.
The transformation of
healthcare in Greenwich has begun.

Fare hike to
hit Londoners
Labour’s London Assembly transport
spokesperson, Val Shawcross, has slammed
Boris Johnson’s decision to raise bus and Tube
fares.
Val said: “This unnecessary, above inflation
fare hike is going to hit the pocket of every
Londoner hard and makes a complete mockery
of the Mayor’s promise to provide value for
money.
“The Mayor has given us no evidence
whatsoever for his claim that there is a
transport finance blackhole.
What the evidence
does point to is an increase in passenger
numbers and revenue in TfL’s coffers.
If
anything there should be a surplus this year, as
there was in previous years.
For Boris to blame
his predecessor for this fare hike is nothing
more than a cheap political shot.
“If the Mayor genuinely is concerned about
the fares budget then he should have thought
twice abolishing the £25 higher charge for gas
guzzlers and should reconsider his expensive
plans to replace the bendy bus.
It’s strange to
say the least that the Mayor is consulting about
the future of the Western extension of the
congestion charge but hasn’t seen fit to consult
Londoners on this fare hike which will hit all
passengers hard.
It just smacks of playing
political games with London’s transport
network”
Clocks go back
The evenings are now slowly but surely getting
shorter and what little sun we had has
abandoned us, it can only mean one thing,
autumn is here!
On the 26th October we will all be putting our
clocks and watches back by one hour, which
means an extra hours sleep but darker evenings
drawing in too.
Drain covers stolen
Bexley council have painted drain covers to help
combat the increasing number of drain cover
thefts.
Apart from losing the metal covers there is
always a high risk of people slipping down flood
covered areas!
It has been reported that as many as almost
ninety covers have been stolen.
Churches and
schools are reporting metal losses and offices.
Civic offices
evacuatedAn emergency evacuation was called at the
Bexley council civic offices when a member of
staff smelt smoke.
The Fire & Rescue team
attended and found the smell was caused by a
burnt out ballast unit in a light fitting over the
the servery area in the old restaurant.
Electricians on site made the safe the problem
and all staff returned to their desks a short while
afterwards.
The quick action by the staff member was
commended.
