seeing their proposed rent increases more than halved for the
coming year.
The new, lower levels have now been set, following a major injection of cash from the Government after the Council lobbied hard for the
extra funding.
Residents had been told their new rent levels
for 2009/2010 would rise by an average of £4.

Now they are getting the good news
that this average rise is only £2.

Greenwich is also pleased to say it was able to
implement the change right from the start of the
new financial year, 6 April.
Councillor Chris Roberts, Leader of Greenwich
Council, said: “We are very glad the Government
listened to our arguments on behalf of residents
and agreed the funding to enable us to do this.
“We hope it goes to show we will fight as hard
as we can on behalf of the people of Greenwich to
ensure they get the best deal, especially in these
more challenging economic times.
“We are firmly on the side of our residents and
are doing everything we can to support them, and
protect them from the effects of the credit
crunch.
”

Eltham hosts SwimFree launch
Greenwich’s Eltham Centre was host to the
national launch of the Government’s
Swim4Free initiative.
A host of VIPs including Culture, Media and
Sport Secretary Andy Burnham, Olympics
Minister Tessa Jowell, new world 400m
freestyle record holder Joanne Jackson, Paralympic gold medallist and new double record
world record holder Heather Fredriksen,
Olympic swimmer and eight-times world
record holder Mark Foster, actor, comedian
and cross-channel swimmer David Walliams
and nationally-ranked local swimmer, 16-yearold Mark Preston, joined local councillors and
other dignitaries for the event, which introduced a two-year, £140 million, national
scheme offering free swimming to the over 60s
and the 16s and under, across the UK.

Ofsted and parents have praised
The John Roan School in its
most recent inspection.
The school has made significant improvements
under its new headteacher, Mr Malone.
The report comments ‘the very good leadership of the
new headteacher has galvanised staff’ and two
parents wrote in saying, ‘the new headteacher
has transformed the school’.
Ofsted inspectors visited the school on the 17th
and 18th
March after the school was given a ‘Notice to improve’ in an inspection in November
2007.
Mr Malone was appointed in January
2008 to give the school a new direction.
The headteacher has significantly improved the
school buildings and replaced computer systems
for staff and pupils.
Student behaviour has also
improved and was deemed ‘Good’ by Ofsted.
Many subject areas have new heads of department which has made a significant difference to
the school.
The schools overall effectiveness is now satisfactory and improving, with some aspects already deemed to be good.
The schools’ sixth
form was judged to be good and the report commented on, ‘how sixth form students are making
an outstanding contribution to the school community’.
Mr Malone said,”This is a team effort, pupils,
staff, governors and parents can be justifiably
proud.
We are all looking to making further improvements in the future.
”

SCHOOL GALVANISED
Oyster Card abuse
Councillor Katie Perrior, met with Deputy Mayor
Kit Malthouse to discuss the Mayor’s plans for the
role out of PayBack London scheme to remove
Oyster cards from young people who abuse them
and they would have to earn them back by doing
Community Service.
It was a manifesto
pledge.
Perrior suggested Bexley could be a trial
borough for the scheme including officer support
and advice to make it a success.
Kit Malthouse
welcomed the offer and said that an announcement about further progress should be made
within the next two months.
Commenting on the
meeting, Cllr Perrior said: “I was delighted to be
able to discuss the possibilities of Bexley becoming a PayBack London trial borough with the
Deputy Mayor.
Our residents young and old have
a right to travel on the bus without bad behaviour.
I feel a scheme which introduces penalties to those
who do not behave will be to be benefit of all our
bus users.
“Bexley Conservatives promised in
their last manifesto to keep people safe.
This is yet
another example of how we go about our work to
ensure we continue to deliver on those promises”

solve the traffic problems in Sidcup.
