Jowell offers

Bexley Conservatives have welcomed the news
that Tessa Jowell recognises the need for
investment in Erith and Thamesmead andcall
upon the Olympics Minister to deliver that
investment irrespective of the Labour Party
candidate selected to fight the seat.
It has been
reported in the national press that Georgia
Gould - one of the candidates in the final
selection process – sent emails to supporters
alleging that Ms Jowell linked the 2012
regeneration cash to Miss Gould’s candidacy
at a recent meeting in the constituency.
Councillor Teresa O’Neill, Leader of the
London Borough of Bexley said; “If the
allegation is true then I am disgusted that a
Government Minister can pledge to deliver
investment into an area dependent on whether
her favoured candidate gets selected to fight
the seat as this is the taxpayers money she is
pledging.
As Ms Jowell recognises the need in
the area then we call upon her to make the
investment possible irrespective of who wins
the Labour Party nomination.
“Bexley residents have suffered from 12
years of the Labour Government and not
recognising the needs of our residents and here
we have a Government Minister
acknowledging the need but only committing
to help deliver if a favoured candidate gets
selected – I shall be writing to the Minister for
a commitment to deliver on the need she has
identified.

The University of
Greenwich has
announced plans to
invest £60 million in
a new development
in Greenwich town
centre.
It has acquired a large site,
spanning Stockwell Street,
Nevada Street and King
William Walk, on which it
intends to build a new library
and a new home for the
School of Architecture &
Construction.
The initiative will provide an
important boost to the local
economy, increasing staff and
student numbers in the town
by about 20% and bringing
additional income to local
businesses.
The university intends to
commission an inspiring
piece of contemporary
architecture, following a
competitive process to select
an architect.
Plans are at a
very early stage but the
university says that it is
committed to consulting with
local residents, businesses and
other neighbouring
organisations as soon as it has
a clear set of proposals.
In the meantime, the
university will be busy on
site, carrying out preliminary
investigations including
archaeological digs, geological
surveys and a study of land
contamination.
A programme
of enabling works will
include the removal of
existing buildings on the site,
many of which are in a poor
state of repair.
All aspects of the
development will be as
sustainable as possible,
constructed to the latest
environmental standards,
with a low carbon footprint.
