Massive overspend on new
council officesReports are circulating that the Bexley First project to knock down the existing council offices and
rebuild them for a cost of £12.
15m has now risen
to an estimated £16.
40m and the income estimated from the disposal of surplus properties will
be much lower than forecast.
Despite this the council are still saying that the
long term savings will more than justify the new
build which should be ready for occupation in the
second half of 2015.
Christmas in Lower
Belvedere
For the first time ever, Santa has included a visit to
Lower Belvedere in his frantic dash around the
UK.
He s due to land there on Saturday 5th December thanks to the combined efforts of
Belvedere Community Forum and Erith Rotary
who are fuelling his trip!
He will be outside Tesco Express on Picardy
Street, Lower Belvedere, between 4pm &
6pm with his sleigh and some of his helpers.
All accompanied children under ten who are
dressed as elves and fairies will receive a free gift
from Santa.
Everyone is invited to come along and join in the
fun, have a mince pie and a hot drink and help
raise money for local Charities.
If you would like more information about the
event, please phone 020 8310 6846
Residents fed
up with Gallions
The Hutchins Road Residents Association are
fed up with the way their social landlord
Gallions are acting, or not in their case.
The Association want Gallions to tidy up their
estate and Tom Broad (Gallions) keeps telling
them they do not have any funding for
maintaining their own land!
The list of what needs doing includes the
following;
1) Vastly overgrown,
2) Bushes and brambles are overhanging
obstructing footpaths,
4) There is absolutely hundreds of items of
rubbish lying around on grass areas and verges
5) There are dangerously wide and deep cracks
in three cycle paths
6) one particular cycle path (damaged by a burnt
out car over three years ago), has never been
repaired despite, yet again, numerous requests
from us.
7) etc.
Summing up, Gallions approach to carrying out
their responsibilities around this area are
shameful, un-professional and dare we say it,
bordering on the edge of childish.
Paul Anderson,
Resident.
Residents’
health at risk
Bexley’s air pollution is far higher than next
year’s legally-binding EU limits for Nitrogen
Dioxide (NO2).
During the last twelve months,
levels of NO2 in Thames Road North were over
the maximum recommended concentration
level.
Furthermore, another site in Erith
recorded 40 days on which levels of particulate
matter (PM10) exceeded a safe amount.
It is estimated that about 3,000 Londoners die every
year from respiratory problems caused or exacerbated by high pollution levels.
Council Pension Fund
Cllr.
Harban Buttar asked the council what was
the state of the official pension fund.
He said the
London Pension fund deficit was now
£210,000,000.
What was Bexley Pension Fund?
Cllr John Waters replied that the deficit was now
£147,000,000 as of the 31st March.
The next
triennial valuation will be carried out on the 31st
March, 2010.
Larner Road
Regeneration
Plans for major regeneration and redevelopment
of the Larner Road estate are beginning to take
shape.
A big step forward has been the appointment of
Scott Wilson Matrix (SWM) as the master
planners for the initial phase of the project.
Housing Asssociation Orbit South has brought
together a core group of estate residents and
local partners, who have been meeting with
SWM to discuss their aspirations for the future
of the estate and the local neighbourhood.
The residents have already highlighted their
priorities for good quality building design, open
spaces, play and community facilities and an
environmentally friendly neighbourhood.
A
mixture of houses and flats, both for rent and
sale, will be options to explore.
These are just the first steps of a very long
journey and success will be dependant upon
securing significant external funding.
They are working very closely with London
Borough of Bexley and the Homes and
Communities Agency.
On a rare visit to Bexley,
the former Deputy Prime
Minister, John Prescott,
presented John Austin with
a Certificate of Long Service, recognising his 50 years
membership of the Labour
Party.
The presentation took place at
the Party’s recent annual dinner where John Prescott was
guest speaker.
