London, England, October 29, 2009 -- 24 7 Parking, experts in finding accessible
parking in London, draw their client?s attention to a proposal which initiates the
UK?s first parking tax.
A pilot scheme is planned for Nottingham in April 2012 which has received a
government green light - the tax will levy a charge of £185 per parking bay each
year for companies with 11 or more spaces.
The so called Workplace Parking Levy (WPL) will rise to £350 in 2014 and it will be
at an employer?s discretion whether to pass the charge on to their employees.
The aim is to reduce congestion, however the scheme has met with business leader
opposition, claiming it?s simply a way for councils to cash in.
The Derbyshire and
Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce has voiced strong concerns too, warning that
many businesses might choose to relocate rather than pay charges, from which
Nottingham City Council could net £11.
3 million per annum.
John Dowson, the chamber?s head of policy and representation, said the scheme ?adds
an unnecessary tax burden on businesses.
?
Conservative shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers said of the scheme, ?At a
time when jobs are under huge pressure, it is wrong to hit enterprise in Nottingham
with a workplace parking levy.
? However the Labour Department of Transport said it
would be entirely up to councils to choose whether workplace charges are an
appropriate way to fund improvements to local transport networks.
It is feared that if the Department for Transport approves the scheme in
Nottingham, other councils will follow suit and submit similar plans.

Keynes, Oxford and Cambridge have already shown interest and the WPL could cost
companies as much as £3.
4 billion each year if rolled out UK wide.
