Overabundance of Holiday Cottages in North Devon & West Country
With gloomy economic times ensuring that the usual holiday in the sun is unlikely
for many this year many have predicted increased fortunes for UK holiday providers
and destinations.
Largely though that prediction seems off the mark.
Kings Nympton, North Devon, UK, May 22, 2009 -- Take the West Country for example.
Historically the biggest family holiday destination for those choosing to holiday
in the UK instead of going abroad.
The West Country and this beautiful area of it
in particular offers a vast choice of glorious locations and holiday cottage
accommodation options but reports are that many of these holiday cottage owners are
struggling to get bookings for the forthcoming May bank holiday and summer.
Holiday
cottages in Devon are particularly badly hit this year.
For the lucky ones that have decided to spend a holiday in the UK this is great
news as it means they have an increased amount of options available to them and
often weekly rates and discounts are reflecting the desperation to get holiday
cottages booked.
For the accommodation owners it isn?t great news.
Richard Harrison, owner of
Collacott Holiday Cottages North Devon explains: ?We actually are having a very
good year as we have a strong repeat customer base and we invest a lot of effort in
advertising, though I know of many other cottage owners and hoteliers in the area
that are really struggling.
Many expected a bumper year as the recession bites into
people?s ability to travel overseas but I think increasingly the UK hospitality
industry realises that it must do a lot more than sit back and wait for the holiday
makers to come.
Those that are doing well are those that have diversified,
advertised more effectively or are offering mid week or out of season deals for
example.
? Mr.
Harrison goes on to explain; ?We are lucky enough to have a BHS
approved horse riding school on site which is a deciding factor for many who book
with us.
?
Another theory is that there is much speculation about the summer of 2009 being a
scorcher.
The UK has been deprived of a decent summer for a number of years and
many people believe that lots of potential holiday makers have resigned themselves
to staying at home and enjoying the sun.
Some retail pundits are expecting record
sales of barbeques and other summer products which again reduces personal finances
and the ability to travel.
