a Course Landaise, a traditional
Gascon sport, remains today the
central event of village Fêtes.
The
modern course dates from 1830.
The
formal course lasts for about two hours.
It
takesplaceinaLandaisearena(rectagular,
with a half-moon at one end) or a circular
Spanish type arena.
It begins with a parade
of the écarteurs, known as the paséo, to the
sound of the casérienne march played by
the band and accompanied by displays
from the show.
During the season (temporada), five groups
of animals (ganaderias) and five teams of
men (cuadrillas) compete as teams and
indivuals.
In a competition, the cuadrilla is
made up of seven écarteurs (en boléro) and
four men in white (a jumper, two trainers
andthecordier,orrope-manipulator).
L école taurine (bull-fighting school) is the
comprehensivetestinggroundthatprepares
competitors for the course Landaise of
tomorrow.
