THE DISEASES CAUSED BY SMOKING
If you stopped smoking today, you will increase your chances for a longer and
richer life.
And we’re not just talking about the money in your pocket, since the
cost of a pack of cigarettes has never been higher.
Smoking decreases your
productivity and secondhand smoke increases the harm to the environment.
But
perhaps the best rationale to convince you to stop smoking is to increase your
health, with the chance of living a longer, healthier life, and decreasing your
chance of suffering from the diseases caused by smoking.
First, the numbers: Almost one-half million Americans will die from smokingrelated causes this year.
Smoking causes 30% of all deaths relating to cancer, and
87% of all deaths relating to lung cancer.
Lung cancer is hard to treat and affects
males and females equally.
Everything the cigarette and its smoke touch carries
the risk of getting cancer.
It starts at the mouth, continues to the larynx, down
your throat to the esophagus, until it reaches the stomach and finally the
bladder.
Smoking-related cancers also include the blood (acute myeloid
leukemia) and organs, mainly the kidneys and pancreas.
There are other deadly diseases besides cancer
that have been found to be caused by smoking.
They include aneurysms (a blood vessel bursts),
heart disease and chronic lung diseases like
COPD.
Smoking can also cause stroke and other
cardiovascular diseases, as well as poor blood
flow to your arms and legs.
Bronchitis and
pneumonia are common with smokers.
If you
have asthma, smoking can make it worse.
Smoking can also cause cataracts and macular degeneration, as well as the loss
of bone density.
These diseases might not kill you, but they sure make it harder
to enjoy your life.
If you’re thinking of starting a family, you need to know that smoking can
decrease your chances.
Not only can smoking cause cancer of the cervix, your
chances of pregnancy are reduced.
Smoking increases the likelihood of
miscarriage, premature birth, and SIDS.
Smoking can also lead to erectile
dysfunction.
Everyone dies; smoking just speeds up the process.
Studies have shown that
smokers die an average of from 13 to 14 years sooner than nonsmokers.
Wouldn’t you rather die from old age?
