This book is the personal story of the three Hesketh brothers, Robert (1789-1868), John (17911838) and William (1794-1856), who as Liverpool merchants with a family history in the port wine
business, started to engage in trade in Brazil in the early nineteenth century and found themselves
promoted to consuls. This was an interesting time when Brazil had recently become a newly
independent nation, but faced dissensions, partly a result of its massive but dispersed geography,
where letters dispatched from São Luís de Maranhão took as long to reach London as they would
to reach Rio de Janeiro. Given that the motivation for this book is primarily a personal tribute to the
family and background of the author's wife, it is a book that sets out primarily to trace personal
