I always felt like the black sheep of the family, the ugly duckling, the odd one out.
Why? For one thing, I
was the middle child among three girls.
My mom loved my older sister Pat because she was always the
ever-helpful daughter while my dad loved my younger sister Angie because she was the youngest and
cutest and she always knew how to get her way around my dad.
That left me alone, without much
attention from either parent.
My older sister received all the privileges, the new clothes, new books in
school, her own room etc whereas I inherited all her hand-me-downs.
After I had used them, they could
not be passed on to my younger sister and so, you guessed it, she too got everything new.
As we grew up, I had to fight for everything I wanted whereas my sisters very much had everything
handed to them on a platter.
That made me very competitive and street-smart.
