We first had an opportunity to see the NX10 system camera in action at the Consumer Electronics Show 2010 in Las Vegas. The NX10 has a 14. 6Mp sensor and all the functionality of a digital SLR, including full manual focusing, priority modes for aperture and shutter speed, a hot shoe connection and interchangeable lenses. However, as the NX10 doesn t feature an internal mirror and pentaprism, its body is smaller and lighter than a DSLR.

The NX10 is Samsung’s answer to the Micro Four Thirds format developed by Panasonic and Olympus. Like the Panasonic and Olympus models, the Samsung NX10 omits the mirror box to create a smaller camera. The NX10 uses an APS-C size CMOS sensor (which is larger than sensors in Micro Four Thirds cameras), and it has a proprietary lens mount, which means you’ll need to choose from one of three Samsung lenses. Also, given the 27mm lens it s not necessarily always wide enough to take a self portrait of two people with your heads fully in the frame. True as it is that wide angles certainly don t purport to producing flattering portraits, so anything wider would admittedly over-enhance facial features, but an extra few mm - say a 24mm - would be great for general use when shooting other subjects too. The 4. 6x zoom, equating to 124mm at its longest end, whilst mostly sufficient also feels a little lacking - a wider angle and longer zoom would really set the ST550 s feature set apart from the crowd, especially with the clever dual screen system.
