Bexley Council will have to pay out more than £150,000 damages after a stately poplar in one of its parks caused subsidence damage to a home 30 metres away. Local authorities, and landowners generally, will have to think long and hard before planting poplars in the future after a court heard their roots can extend for more than 35 metres. Josephine Robbins 1930s-build home at 6 Radnor Avenue, Welling, Kent, began to suffer cracking in 2003 and she pointed the finger at a mature hybrid black poplar providing shade to walkers in nearby Danson Park. The cracks in her rear extension got worse over the next few years until the summer of 2007 when increased rainfall, and heavy pruning of the poplar s canopy, reduced the problem. At the High Court, Mr Justice Edwards-Stuart ruled that the subsidence damage caused by the tree should have been foreseen by the London Borough of Bexley and ordered it to pay Mrs Robbins more than £150,000 damages, including £3,0

Craig Mackinlay, Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner Candidate for Kent, met with Colonel Tim Collins OBE to discuss Craig’s election priorities and how he could be involved in Craig’s campaign prior to the 15th November election. Colonel Tim Collins was widely trailed as the likely Conservative candidate for the PCC role in Kent, but unexpectedly pulled out of the race in late May, citing difficulties in attending the various members’ hustings meetings. Following those hustings meetings, Craig Mackinlay was selected as the Conservative candidate on 17th June. Craig and Colonel Collins found wide common ground, particularly on a strengthened role for Special Constables to fill perceived gaps in police visibility, particularly in rural areas, and the benefit of local Specials having in-depth knowledge of their communities. Offering full support for Craig, Colonel Collins said, "Craig Mackinlay is a young man with the right skills to make a real difference to policing in Kent.

Police were called to Crayford Way junction with Mill Place, Crayford at 06. 34hrs on 14 June following reports of a road traffic collision and a motorcyclist trapped under a van. On arrival officers found the motorcyclist, Mr Bury, suffering serious injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 07. 24hrs. Detectives from the Road Death Investigation Unit continue to make enquiries into the circumstances of the incident. Bexley Council Leader, Cllr Teresa O Neill, her Cabinet colleague Cllr Linda Bailey and James Brokenshire, MP for Old Bexley & Sidcup, met with Waitrose executives in central London at the end of last week (Friday 18 May). They met Diana Hunter, Waitrose s Director Convenience Stores and James Gilhooley, its Head of Property, at the company s corporate office in Victoria. Cllr O Neill has raised the
