How to Assist the Small-Scale Farmer Bob Watson Director of the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural affairs The key messages in my presentation are taken from the recently completed International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD), which was approved by 60 developed and developing countries in South Africa in April, 2008. The IAASTD was co-sponsored by the World Bank, FAO, UNEP, UNESCO, UNDP, WHO and the GEF. The key findings of the Global Summary for Decision-makers and the executive summary of the Synthesis Report are attached to this presentation (web address: http://www. agassessment. org/) Food prices: The world currently faces a food problem of high prices caused by: (i) increasing demand from rapidly developing countries; (ii) high energy prices; (iii) a series of poor harvests due to variable weather at a time of low

Indian agriculture has typical land holding pattern with dependence on local credit bodies for finances. Indian Government is paying huge amount of subsidy to provide kerosene at cheaper rates to rural poor people thus incurring huge fiscal deficit. Diesel, the largest consumed petro-product

Testimony Presented by Dr. Johanna Mendelson Forman Senior Associate Center for Strategic and International Studies Washington, D. C March 13, 2007 Jatropha and Peacebuilding in Haiti Chairman Engel and distinguished members of this subcommittee: I appreciate the opportunity to submit for the record this short discussion about how Haiti could benefit from the creation of a sustainable biofuels economy that would not only relieve poverty, but would also provide energy for light, transport and cooking. It is especially timely to consider alternative energy sources for Haiti, and also for the Caribbean. Fossil fuel dependence must be countered by strong programs that assist developing states create sustainable energy futures in a time when we face dramatic challenges created by global warming and dwindling resources for energy. As Haiti returns to a more politically stable situation, and the government of President Rene Preval work

The newly developed bio-diesel processor was capable of preparing the oil esters sufficient in quantity for running the commonly used farm engines. The fuel properties of bio-diesel such as kinematic viscosity and specific gravity were found within limited of BIS standard. Operational efficiency of diesel pump set for various blends of

Wani* , M. Osman, Emmanuel D’Silva, and T. K. Use of non-edible oil as biodiesel provides a win-win proposition for the densely populated Asian countries. Perennials such as Pongamia pinnata and Jatropha curcas have offered an excellent opportunity to remedy the problems of environmental protection and oil crisis. Strategies for rehabilitating degraded lands and improving livelihoods through bi
