These children are already gifted with a lot of intelligence. You can frame these activities to them as a way of learning people smarts to balance out their book smarts. This article will cover children from the ages of 6 to 13 years old. Prior to age 6, it is helpful to start pre-school children off with video clips of the child s everyday social experiences. Film the child playing with his or her peers in the sandpit, or involved in games of chasing, or hide and seek. You can then pause the video clip at different times to discuss particular cues and responses. Ages 6-9 ye

While the lack of social interaction and speech can sometimes be missed in the home environment (not all children vocalize and interact at the same level at similar age), poor interaction with other children of a similar age is a significant indicator of potential autism. Due to the lack of social awareness, the autistic child may appear to prefer playing alone. The tendency of the autistic to focus on an object, for example, may be apparent in a simple activity like playing with a toy truck. While it appears that the child is indeed playing with the truck, in

Written by: Autism Advisor Autistic Children Schools Many children with autism attend schools, where their teachers or instructors give them homework. There may be times when the child refuses to do his or her homework. How do we get autistic children to do their homework? The first important task for getting an autistic child to do their homework is to make sure when they begin school, to let them know, that homework is an exciting challenge and they will have homework during their school years. Parents, caregivers, should make a positive game of it. Do not do their homework for them, even though they have the disorder of autism. Try to hint and direct them by giving them directions, understanding their questions, their homework plan, when the homework is due, and how much they understand or need t

Many times our children mimic what they see us do. They also learn to react with anger if we react with anger. This is even truer with a child with a disability. If we are going to teach our children differently, parents need to model what they want their children to do. This includes a more thoughtful response to instances of misbehaving. We teach everything else to a child with autism. We teach simple things like putting on a shirt. We teach more complex things like speaking and learning to read. Why do we punish when someone misbehaves? Autistic Social Skills They obviously do not know how to do some things like behave. We need to teach how to behave. Breaking positive and wanted behavior

A bit of experimenting after the initial education session may be required to successfully teach autistic people besides a great deal of patience and dedication to the cause. Understanding routine and scheduling of regular tasks for an autistic person is very important for their teacher to achieve new ground with the learning process; an organized work environment that is conducive to the kind of learning to be imparted is essential too besides having a calm, capable attitude. 2) When teaching a person

This includes but is not limited to inappropriate outbursts, aggressive behavior towards others, and banging their heads off walls. To prevent these and other outrageous behaviors one must utilize self management. Giving the autistic person control over themselves is often the solution to control violent situations and outbreaks. This can also be a valuable tool in learning how others behave as well. Self management works so well because the individual no longer feels like they are controlled by others. When you teach a person with autism self control throughout certain parts of the day they will become more likely to continue self control for longer periods of time. It s i

Written by: Autism Advisor Autism Test Children Autism is a disorder that affects the entire person and most often lasts for the lifetime of the person that it affects. Specifically this disorder affects one s ability to create emotions, memories, sensory abilities, non-verbal communication skills and much more. It affects one in one hundred and fifty individuals of all races and social status; and tends to affect more boys than it does girls. A common description that I have heard among professionals is that many people who suffer from autism can think thoughts but cannot vocalize those same thoughts. Key Symptoms Include the Following: Repetitive Behavior - For example, a young child may seem unusually fixated on a particular toy, constantly arranging objects in a specific way or obsessive about certain things. Nevertheless, nothing can shrink an already small space faster than the uncontrollable ranting of a mini human being. Let s face it, we ve all been there. If it wasn t in a plane, then in a restaurant, movie theater, or some other public space where one little person s frustration begged the attention of everybody in the place. Was the recent debate over children with disabilities fueled over one such incident? Possibly not, but one shock jock s on-air remarks caused waves of indignance and disgust to roll through the country like ripples on a calm lake. At the risk of refueling the ire over this subject, it does beg the question, was he wrong? Not about the insensitivity towards children with disab

Recent statistics show that one in 150 births result in a form of autism. This means that 1 to 1. 5 million Americans suffer in some form from autism. This number does not include all those who suffer from PDD and Asperger s and other spectrum disorders. Since the 1990s autism cases have risen 13% in the US. The cost to treat those who are in need is $90 billion dollars a year. Early diagnosis is important and can reduce the costs associated with lifelong care by two thirds. The ASA predicts that in 10 years these costs will double if not triple and be somewhere in the vicinity of $200 - $400 a year. In the US a new case of autism is diagnosed almost every 20 m

There are general guidelines that will make autism detection slightly easier. Just remember that just because your child has some of the symptoms that are on the list of possible autism signs doesn t mean that your child has autism. The more symptoms an individual has the more likely it is that they are affected by autism. A professional diagnosis needs to be made before you can be certain. What is usually seen is a badly developed, or impaired, ability to communicate with other humans. A lack of social skills and response to situations in which a parent tries to make contact with their child can often be found in children with autism. Which is why it is very important that you monitor your child s behaviour

I did not always feel this way, nor did I foresee that Autism would be a blessing, not a hindrance, for me. "Your son has Autism. " These four words change your life and your whole perception of the world around you. If you are like me, I had no idea what those four words meant when I first heard them. Part of me wanted to disbelieve. Part of me wanted to cry. Part of me was angry. I was incredibly confused. However, I was quickly grounded when my dear friend, Linda, looked at me and questioned why I was crying. "This doesn t change how you feel about Alex*. And it certainly doesn t change ho

High functioning autism is a condition that falls within the autism category, but children who experience this type of condition, only experience mild symptoms of autism. Normally they can interact socially and only have small social impairments. People who experience high functioning autism can often be misdiagnosed with Aspergers syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. It causes anywhere from mild to severe social impairment and an inability to function normally in society. However, there are ways to treat many of the cases of autism. Autistic children can learn and excel and if certain teaching methods are used, their progress can be nothing short of fantastic. One of the most important things to realize in making learning fun for autistic children is the fact that they learn in different ways than children without autism. Autistic children generally have a disability in social skills. Sometimes this difficulty in communication involves language skills. However, there are a number of ways to make learning these important skills more than just a chore. By injecting fun into learning, it has been shown that autistic childr

It is also common for autistic children to have difficulty connecting 2 events. For example, if teaching reading with flash cards, it is best to have both the picture and written word on the same side. If they are on different sides, the child may not understand that they represent the same idea. Although there are many unique ways of teaching, the following three methods have proven to be helpful in teaching autistic children: o Social Stories Social stories are used to teach social skills to children with autism. I m sure you don t have to think far back to when your autistic child last ignored you or had a tantrum that you felt totally helpless about. You are not the only one feeling frustrated. Do you think that your child doesn t listen to you? Do you think maybe that sometimes they just flat out ignore you on purpose? Your autistic child is different; your child is differently special in a way that he cannot communicate to you. Imagine not being able to communicate what you want. How do you think that would feel? This is also an important skill for our children with Autism to learn. There are several techniques that seem to help with this area. Of course the skills should be close to their age level. One of those techniques is to get a child with Autism to sit with same sex peers in groups. Then later you or other people can discuss how other members of the group acted towards the opposite sex. This will have to be done many times. The amount of times this situation might have to be repeated depends on the skill that has to be learned. The length of time you have to create those situations and debrief also depends on whether or not an inappropriate behavior needs to be learned. Teaching Autism Children The skill can be taug

Most parents with an autistic child are extremely intimidated by thinking of potty training, due to the fact of introducing new and stressful things into the life of an autistic child. This may appear to be overwhelming and seem impossible. A child may feel perfectly comfortable wearing diapers, even as they age. It has been known for autistic children to remain in diapers, or some form of diaper protection, throughout their life, due to difficulty that parents did not want to grasp the concept, or willingness to attempt potty training or communicate it to them.
