The 21st century will present challenges that demand our very best as a global community. That means utilising the talents and resources of both women and men.
IWDA adds value to the development process through providing gender, technical and thematic expertise and bringing an informed, gendered perspective to all that we do.
Gender-sensitive approaches are central to effectively progressing internationally agreed development goals. Women and men, girls and boys, need to shape, contribute to, and benefit from, development. This is best achieved by explicitly identifying and addressing their respective interests and needs.
We appreciate that sustainable, gender-smart development values good process as much as outcomes.
We understand that each community’s circumstances are unique but that there are ideas and approaches that can be shared, shaped and adapted to fit those circumstances. Sharing knowledge, skills and experience among and between communities and countries is critical. But we also recognise that taking learnings from one context to the next is never a straightforward process of ‘rolling out’ a proven program.
We understand the challenges of gender mainstreaming and current thinking about how best to manage these. We appreciate the importance of integrating gender effectively across an organisation or program so that policy objectives are operationalised and progress is measured and accounted for.
