Bexley Council is focusing on
transport and safety as part of a
new scheme Elinor McClarence
reports.
Councillors said on a meeting in Bexleyheath
in April that negotiations with TFL are currently
going on to improve transport.
The main problem
discussed by councillors was the congestion of
buses by the clock tower.
Councillor Ron French said he often uses the
buses with his pensioner’s freedom pass and
‘many of the buses do not pull in to the bus stop
properly.
’ Councillor Linda Bailey said she ‘tries
to avoid being in Bexley town centre in the middle of the day despite being ‘a robust person’ due
to large groups of children and slow-flowing traffic.
There are also plans to improve the night activity in Bexleyheath Town Centre.
A night Vision
pilot is being considered to increase surveillance
in the area.
This comes as Bexleyheath’s nightlife
has been highlighted in council plans as ‘beyond
management control measures.
’
Joseph Pollard asked if the West side of the town
centre ‘which looks a bit dilapidated’, will be developed as he does not want that area to ‘turn
seedy.
’
There are plans to improve the ‘general public
realm.
’ The general moves in this plan are to improve one part of an area in the hope this will naturally lead to rejuvenating the whole area.
This
includes better pedestrian access, new cycle lanes
and simplified road layouts.

Welling Round Table Number
503 are like most other Round
Tables with members who join
in an act of community spirit
rather than what they can get
out of it.
The presentation recently of another mobile
scooter to be used by disabled people who shop
at The Mall in Bexleyheath is another example
of the good they do with cash they raise.
The scooter was presented to Mary Driscoll of
Shop Mobility (020 830 5237) by the Mayor of
Bexley Cllr.
Nick 0’Hare and the Mayoress his
wife Marie, the Mayors last but one act of good
work in his busy year.
Shop Mobility with their six mobility scooters
and wheelchairs make it possible for residents to
enjoy a days visit to this busy shopping centre.
They make a small charge of £5 a day for a
powered scooter and just £3 for a wheelchair,
If you are under the age of forty five you can
apply to join the Welling Round Table where you
will mix with like minded people who enjoy
each others company and do good work in the
community.
For example this very active group
organise the annual firework display in Danson
Park which attracts thousands of folk.
The
organisation has been going now for eighty years
so if you fancy joining go along to one of their
meetings and judge for yourself.
Be aware it
might just change your outlook on life.
Helping
other people can be rewarding.

Jalsha Celebrates
25th Anniversary
with Honour,
Spice and Soul
The Mayor of Bexley Councillor Nick O’Hare
and Mayoress Mrs Maria O’Hare were Guests
of Honour at the Jalsha Tandoori Restaurant in
Station Road, Sidcup on Tuesday 5th May,
when the venue celebrated its quarter century.
This was the second visit by their worships,
who were previously VIP Guests in their
capacities as Deputy Mayor and Deputy
Mayoress in September 2007 at one of the
restaurant’s charity evenings.
An enthusiastic dance party ensued, as
Shenton Dixon, a West End show star,
performed his usual amazingly authentic
tributes in his ‘Strictly Soul’ Show to legends
George Benson complete with guitar, Louis
Armstrong on trumpet, the funky Stevie
Wonder, and deep-voiced Barry White.
Improving transport in Bexleyheath
Safer Transport Team
Bexley’s Safer Transport Team held their latest surgery in the heart of Bexleyheath’s busy
shopping area.
Bexleyheath bus garage provided the team
with a bus and it was parked on the pedestrian
area near the shopping mall.
Police Community Support Officers were on hand to talk to
shoppers, listen to their concerns and hand
out leaflets and their latest Safer Transport
newsletter.
