A single 22x1m trench was opened at Sheriffside farm over the suspected ditch and bank of an enclosure identified by the RCAHMS during aerial survey in 1981. Features identified within the trench were excavated, recorded and surveyed. In addition, a geophysical survey was undertaken in the field - covering half of the known extent of the possible site. The excavations revealed several artefacts including polishing stones, a hand thrown ceramic sherd, and charcoal. The excavations failed to confirm the presence of the putative cropmark enclosure but did identify a terrace with associated platform and cut features such as postholes and rockcut channels – charcoal retrieved from the fill of one of the rock cut features dated to 2030 ± 30 or cal BC 110 – BC 50 (1σ) SUERC 35712.

As part of on-going research into East Lothian hillforts, a topographic and Erosion survey was undertaken of The Chesters by Rampart Scotland. This work was grant aided by Historic Scotland following a programme of gorse removal. The work was undertaken with volunteers under professional supervision. The initial results of the management survey indicate that while the site has suffered from rabbit burrowing and stock pressure in the past it is currently stabilising and recovering. In addition, the revised topographic survey of the upper enclosed area has created an accurate plan of the interior and also plotted the locations of World War 2 installations removed in the 1970's as well as locating a possible new entrance to the north. It is hoped to complete the survey in August 2011 and to undertake geophysical survey to locate some of the associated pit alignments. This may be followed with targeted excavation in 2012.

The first season of a proposed three season research excavation utilising volunteers and professionals. The project involved a new topographic survey, combined with geophysical, vegetation and erosion surveys as well as a single staggered trench (28.5m long, 1m wide) running across the defensive sequence immediately to the south of the south eastern entrance. In addition, 11 1m2 test-pits were excavated around the exterior of the fort. A total of 17 hut platforms were recorded in the interior of the hillfort. The initial results of the fieldwork indicate that inner Rampart was constructed of soil and rubble between stone kerbs and measured 3.4m wide by 0.32m high. The inner Rampart was associated with a ditch 2.3m wide and 1.4m deep, the middle and outer Ramparts were constructed of soil and stone with a stone kerb to the downslope side.
