Aquatic Renewable Energy Technologies (Aqua-RET) is an aquatic renewable energy e-learning tool funded by the EU Leonardo Da Vinci Programme. Revision 0. 1 - December 2008 Case Study – European OWC pilot plant Pico/Azores Project Description The European Pico OWC plant was built from 1995 to 1998 within the framework of two EC JOULE projects and co-funding from EDP (Electricidade de Portugal) and EDA (Electricidade dos Açores), respectively the national and regional utilities. Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon was responsible for the conception and basic engineering studies of this plant and co-ordinated the project. The plant is a bottom-mounted shoreline structure, equipped with a Wells turbine with guide vanes. The plant was completed in 1999 but flooding and malfunction of the Wells turbine affected the testing program of the plant, leading to long delays (Falcão, 2000). Full scale testing was only performed during a short period in October 1999. In 2003, the Wave Ener

1 ‘Energy from our Oceans’ Ireland s first Wave-Energy Generator arrives in Galway PRESS RELEASE: March 06 The power of the Atlantic is about to be harnessed in a Marine Institute / Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) initiative to open a wave energy test site a mile and a half off the coast of Spiddal, Co. Galway. The 37-hectare site will be open to entrepreneurs and engineers to test prototype ocean energy generators. The first wave energy generator, Wavebob, has arrived at Galway Docks and will be deployed on the Spiddal site early next week. This marks the first visible step in a national programme to become leaders in ocean energy technology. The Marine Institute and SEI have to date invested €300k in university based research and a further €850k in industry based research of ocean energy technology. Together with significant private investments by entrepreneurs such as William Dick, Wavebob Ltd. , the initiative is beginning to bear fruit. Both agencies have been working c

The most valuable measurements were those of water waves radiated by propagating bulge waves. At present there is no theoretical framework with whi

T. Rainey4 , S. J. Rimmer5 & A. T. Roach3 Summary The ANACONDA all-rubber WEC operates in a completely new way, capturing water waves as “bulge waves” in a giant water-filled rubber tube, aligned head-to-sea. It offers new possibilities for low capital and operational costs, based on the unique durability of rubber, and the single moving part (a conventional medium-head unidirectional water turbine). See www. bulgewave. com. Avon Fabrications LLP have recently taken an exclusive license to manufacture the device, which has been selected by the Carbon Trust for the Marine Energy Accelerator programme. Initial model tests show good capture width and wide bandwidth. The economics of the device depend on the price of the rubber, per unit of elastic energy stored in it over its lifetime, in

15 October 2008 Within the framework of the Oceantec Project which, developed by both companies, aims to encourage industrial growth in the Basque Country IBERDROLA AND TECNALIA INSTALL THE FIRST PROTOTYPE FOR PRODUCING WAVE ENERGY ON THE COAST OF GUIPÚZCOA • Once the testing of this first device is completed, both companies plan to work on an actual size prototype capable of producing in one year a quantity of renewable energy sufficient to supply the domestic consumption of some 950 homes • The Oceantec Project, which has a budget of 4. 5 million euros, is being developed through Perseo, the company for promoting investment in R+D established by IBERDROLA this year IBERDROLA and TECNALIA Corporación Tecnológica, have installed, within the framework of the Oceantec Project, the first prototype for producing wave energy on the coast of Guipúzcoa, at the town of Pasajes. This initiative, which has a budget of
