The objective was to rupture the satellite’s fuel tank to dissipate the approximately 1,000 pounds of hydrazine, a hazardous material which could pose a danger to people on Earth, before it entered into Earth’s atmosphere. USS Decatur and USS Russell were also part of the task force. For more, see Page 7. The Blue Angels perform their first official air show of the 2008 season at Naval Air Facility El Centro, Calif. , their winter training base. After 120 practice shows starting in early January the six Navy and Marine Corps pilots were finally able to show off their skills at the season opener in their F/A-18 Hornets. The Naval Flight Demonstration Team traditionally opens their air show season at El Centro before going out on the road and moving their headquarters to NAS Pensacola, Fla. , for the rest of the year. The Boeing-built X-48B successfully completed its eighth flight of its flight test program Jan. 31, 2008. Among the test points completed during the flight were airspeed calibrations, steady-heading sideslips, and roll and pitch doublets. The 8. 5 percent scale, remotely piloted X-48B is a cross between a conventional aircraft and a flying wing design. Flight tests are intended to validate the potential advantages of the blended wing body aerodynamic concept over conventionally designed aircraft. For more on the X-48B, see Page 8. During the almost eight-hour spacewalk, Walheim and astronaut Stanley Love (out of frame), mission specialist, installed a grapple fixture on the Columbus laboratory and prepared electrical and data connections on the module while it rested inside Space Shuttle Atlantis’ payload bay. The crewmembers also began work to replace a large nitrogen tank used for pressurizing the station’s ammonia cooling system. Inset: Photographed through a window on the International Space Station, the station’s robotic Canadarm2 moves the Columbus laboratory from its stowage position in Space Shuttle Atlantis’ (STS-122) payload bay to the starboard side of the Harmony module. The Northrop Grumman-built Global Hawk finished 2007 on a high note, exceeding its previous record by delivering five production aircraft to the U. S. Air Force. All nine of the Block 10 aircraft have been completed - seven for the Air Force plus two for the U. S. Navy’s Global Hawk Maritime Demonstration, as well as two ground stations each consisting of a mission control element and a launch and recovery element. Seventeen aircraft are presently in various stages of production and flight test - six Block 20s, 10 Block 30s and one Block 40, plus six ground stations. For more on Global Hawk, see Page 8.
